@gunner sadly I can’t be much help. I loathed the Java classes I took. Could never quite get the hang of it. A lot of swing and a miss.

@gunner it's been a bit, but my main language is C# which is a close cousin. What sort of project are you working on?

@alexandra Python is a lot of fun! I've been playing with it quite a bit lately, but I wanted to learn something different, I kind of randomly chose Java

@gunner @eel If all you want to do is write Android apps you might want to consider Kotlin, since it’s now an officially supported Android language and lots of apps are moving to Kotlin.

@Boudicca it sounds exciting! I never finished undergrad, became an artist instead of getting my degree in comp sci/mathematics, now I'm just trying to learn outside of school. It's slow going though, as I have a child who begs for a lot of attention.

@steveroy @eel I already know a bit of C and Java, just not everything. So truth be told, I'd rather slog through brushing up what I already know and expanding on that than learning something completely foreign.

@gunner Kudos to you! It’s hard to split your time and attention like that. I understand- I’ve been there too. My undergrad was in ceramics- and I had all my kids while attending. 😆 tryna reach over my expanding belly to do wheel work was fun.

@gunner I've been using Java since the 90s (as well as other languages). I think it's a good choice of language to learn first. It's one of the least "idiomatic" programming languages: where many languages have different "styles" meaning the same algorithm can be expressed different ways, in Java there's generally just one sensible way to do things. Some programmers find this boring, but it does mean you can look at pretty much any Java code and very readily understand it.

@gunner I am a professional Java developer as my day job. I loathe the language. At one time it was my most hated programming language. But I like where I work, and it was either be a Java developer or be a systems administrator for RHEL, and I hate Red Hat more than I hate Java. For "something you can write phone/tablet apps in" I normally favor Javascript. Everybody needs to learn it for something, and these days even desktop apps like Visual Studio: Code are written in it.

@gunner Most languages, once you add in popular frameworks, are huge and complicated. You might consider having a specific goal for what you want to accomplish with it, and then working specifically toward that goal.We live in an era where things like the Project Lombok redefine the look and feel of the language itself. Without a clear goal it will be hard to measure your success. There is no finish line for "learn Java," and precious few milestones to gauge progress.
