The only reason I see for Signal not being a self-hosted service is that admins won't update their server at the same time, making security weaker depending on who you are chatting with

tbh I would love to host a Signal server and make custom apps for my lover(s) to be sure our content is in a location I know (for example, at home)But that would need them to trust me on not putting malicious code and updating regularly the system

@mrtino Why not do an XMPP?Pretty sure you can query the version of the clients if disclosed and the software stack is much more open.

@mrtino I think the main reason for moxie is the current use of gca and the resulting reduction in user-friendliness of not using it. 🤷‍♂️

@mrtino Yeah but that’s not gonna change if people are going to continue hacking on centralised stuff.

@lanodan @mrtino because it's broken, nobody knows how to use it and there isn't a single working (i mean, *working*) client?

@gordon @mrtino Get signal to be actual free software and not something that kills it owns forks and you’ll get the same actually…Matrix has no working clients either.IRC/Mail clients are basically the only ones without much of this issue because of how simple it is (without the extra features like S/MIME, PGP, HTML).

@lanodan @mrtino yeah, who needs confidentiality anyway…Matrix actually has a single shitty working client. I mean. XMPP doesn’t have one. I tried, really. For many years. But no, even with Conversations or Dino, messages aren’t sent or received. Multi-ressource aren’t working at all

@gordon @mrtino I have yet to have theses kind of issues with poezio or gajim. And OMEMO is basically broken on the implementation sides, I do not know about Conversations but Dino one managed to get a worst UX than the gajim one.And the issue with Matrix is sorry but the same as with Discord basically, only the web interface ~works, the rest is in a circle of non-maintainance and gets broken with API updates.
