Thread.I'll tell this story without identifying anybody except my father.I have five other siblings, so this is like a firing squad where one shooter gets a blank. You won't know which of my sibling did this.My father was a rough man.

He was a good provider, but he was almost totally remote.Outrageously intelligent, great sense of humor, skilled on almost all fronts--but emotionally distant. One of my siblings got married, and the person asked my parents to pay for a HUGE dinner and the wedding. It cost a fortune.

At the dinner, my sibling got up to make a speech. It was the most fulsome praise of my father I've heard. And it was totally dishonest. It went on and on and on and on.Finally my father said, "Stop. You're laying it on too thick."I almost had a hernia trying not to laugh.

My sibling thought that by buttering up my father, my father would forget that insane cost of the TV-wedding.It totally backfired. My father got pissed off for being treated like he was an idiot.I don't know any Muslims, and this issue is too delicate to address. But I wonder if they think maybe New Zealand is laying it on too thick.

See, even though my father was remote, he wasn't stupid or senile or vulnerable to flattery. My brother Tim and I saw our parents' through their deaths. It wasn't hard, in the sense that we simply did what had to be done. Both parents died VERY hard. But Tim and I were totally REAL for the ten months that it took our parents to die. There was no showboating.

I saw something today that angered me: Men wearing one fingernail painted with colored polish to draw attention to the issue of child abuse.Every single guy who did that felt that he'd done his job.He wore fingernail polish, and now he's moral.I have a lot of contempt for people like that.

Wearing nail polish does absolutely nothing to help children. It's hollow symbolism.I would've loved to hear my father tear these guys a new you-know-what.My sibling never recovered from my father saying, "Stop with the bullshit. It's making me sick."Everyone should say that at least once in their life.END

@ThomasWic I haven't seen the nail polish yet. But it sounds about as useful as Michelle Obama holding a sign saying "Bring our girls back". That did absolutely nothing but I bet she broke an arm patting herself on the back.

@ThomasWic you really cut to the pure chase. I doubt your father had the pure insight you have. He had cruelty and directness. but no insight/learning. or so it seems to me.

@ThomasWic I feel the same way.One painted finger nail is ostentatious. That may make them feel pious but that’s not helping kids.I’m fasting for lent for the 1st time in many decades. Not because I’m pious but because I’m a spoiled brat.I’m getting back to my roots & safe happy times. At 1st it was easy but now it’s starting to get hard& I’m not enjoying my sacrifice 1 bit.I’m hanging in their because I think I must. The best part, I got my sister&daughter to join me.That’s a good thing.😂🤣

@ThomasWic I have a genuine question. In your opinion, does calling out phony emotions or phony virtue signalling produce desirable results?Or does it backfire? As in the old saying, "If you speak the truth, have a foot in the stirrup."Or does it depend on the timing? What has your experience been?

@ThomasWic I did something just as stupid once-When Clintons first won the WH.I wore black clothes.(in mourning for my country)vowing to wear black until we voted in a good President.I wore black for a LONG time. Now its a habit.I HAVE added brown boots and shoes though,im healing. The lesson i learned was my vote wasnt enough.I had to get off my ass and participate,Be proactive and be part of the solution, not part of the problem.I didnt know how and didnt own a computer which would have helped.

@ThomasWic Most of what the left is hollow symbolism. They point fingers at the opposition (the nra is their favorite bogeyman), create hashtags that artificially trend on social media (often from people with blue checkmarks), and blame a God they largely don't believe in for all the wrong in the world, plus they jump on every trend and fake outrage bandwagon. Often times their "solutions" are designed to punish people who did nothing wrong, like reparations for slavery.

@ThomasWic Agree that NZ is laying it too thick. However, we have to keep in mind that it only has a population of 5 million. To them, it is a pretty big event.

@ThomasWic We're creatures of habit. Somewhere along the way, I acquired the habit of telling people the truth (as I saw it). I'm not sure it's always turned out all that well.

@ThomasWic Which reminds me of an old joke:A woman is standing naked in front of the bathroom mirror and says to her husband, "My boobs are too small. I want to get a boob job."

@ThomasWic The husband says, "There's no need to do that. Just rub a piece of tissue paper between your breasts every day for a month, and they'll get bigger."

@ThomasWic The woman is skeptical, but decides to try it. She rubs tissue paper between her breasts vigorously every morning for a month, but nothing happens. She complains to her husband that it isn't working. "Give it a little longer," he replies.

@ThomasWic After the third month, with still no results, the woman is frustrated and asks her husband, "How do you even know this will work?""It worked on your ass, didn't it?" he replies(Rumor has it that she visited a divorce attorney later that day.)

@ThomasWic I beg forgiveness from any woman that this chestnut might offend. The same joke can be told with the roles reversed, pertaining to male anatomy.I just have a quirky tendency to kid around when a question is really eating at me.....

@ThomasWic Great thread..hope this doesn't stomp any anyone's ego but I sometimes feel the same way when I read accolades about you and Saul. Its gushy mushy idolation to the 10th degree. I respect you both for starting this after twitter's fiasco. You both walk the talk. Just not on water.

@ThomasWic this could be my dad. 6 of us & when we were too much (often) he would hide in his bedroom. Left our mom & us disappearing for years came back with a new wife my age & didn’t understand our reluctance to embrace his new life & wife strained relationship till said wife kicked him out when he was dying then we stepped up & took care of him. But he never could understand why there was anger from his kids we wanted a dad we got a cool aloof man who sired us & had no emotions to give

@Dawnz @ThomasWic I subscribe to this forum because I trust the knowledge and analysis that they provide to people here. So I put my money into it which is really important for their success. It doesn't mean that I agree with every nuance of their thinking. Just some responses to them go overboard in my opinion.
