@animeirl Drain on society? I'm not the one arguing we should restructure our entire civilization for some marginal benefits because you have a hate-on for one particular technology, or because we might be wiping out some particular strains of ungulate.

@animeirl Oh no, the horror, a society where we more evenly distribute the fruits of engineering and increased energy density and consumption instead of all living some austere life in shoebox sized holes in the wall to appease some sense of 'balance.'

@digifox the only way we can truly live is to kill fucking everything. haha, yes.

@animeirl It's not /necessary/ to do so; I find nature nice to have around, it's pleasant to look at (I grew up in a densely wooded area, in fact,) but it has no inherent moral standing aside from what we gain from it aesthetically and materially.

@digifox why not just go full solipsist, dude? Why stop at animals? other humans have no value other than what you materially and aesthetically gain from them as well

@animeirl You're implying that we have to pick one extreme or the other here. Either all life is worth moral consideration or none is? That seems rather simplistic.

@animeirl I have chosen that sentient life is the thing which has value. This seems far more consistent with the tradeoffs that humans have to make living than anything else.

@digifox megafauna are sentient though?

@animeirl In what sense of sentience? I'm referring to specifically metacognition and the ability to engage in abstract thought. Passing the mirror test isn't going to cut it, we can build machines that can do that.

@digifox you're misusing the word sentient. Most animals more complicated than a fruit fly are sentient and thus it's unethical to hunt them to extinction

@digifox pesticides are the leading cause of the current "insect apocalypse" and as an intelligent person who likes living in an interesting, biodiverse world that is capable of providing food that isn't fucking soylent, yeah I am against pesticide use obviously.

@digifox im implying you're drawing an arbitrary line in the sand. if animals don't matter, why do humans? humans are also animals, after all.

@digifox don't waste your time with @animeirl She's in TOM, and can't think straight:Rabbits and ants pollute. You want to minimize their cost on plant life. Humans on the other hand are ruining the planet at large.Weight scales, yours wins.

@animeirl ALL pesticide use? Not even responsible or reduced pesticide use? FFS. You realize even 'organic' farmers use pesticie, just 'natural' ones that are often even more polluting/toxic?

@digifox organic is a bullshit, corporate approved label that is mostly meaningless in a practical sense so im not sure why you brought it up. Most pesticide use should be eliminated for the sake of a habitable planet. Eliminating beef/pork subsidies and redirecting that money to make up for lost yield due to reduced pesticide use at the cost of making it more expensive to kill yourself overeating bacon and burgers.Current industrial farming need to be entirely phased in favor of techniques like hydroponics though before the entirety of earth's freshwater supply becomes biologically dead due to fertilizer runoff.

@digifox the world im proposing is inevitable. the question is whether we transition to a sustainable civilization now, or wait until there's no other option and everything else is dead.
