I'm thinking of switching from the German QWERTZ keyboard layout to a US layout, for more convenient programming symbols, and for better pair programming compatibility. Opinions? Experiences?

@blinry Totally worth it.If you use X11, you can put the following line into your ~/.xinitrcsetxkbmap -layout us -variant altgr-intl -option nodeadkeys; It's the US layout, but you can use AltGr for the Umlauts.

Currently, I have ISO-style hardware (with an L-shaped return key), and I probably don't want to change that (or should I?) On Linux, the "altgr-intl" variant seems convenient for typing umlauts?

@blinry do it.Programming becomes easier to type, I claim. And with the appropriate settings, it is still possible to type umlauts.I have this line in my .xsession/.xinitc: setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout us -variant altgr-intl -option caps:escape # -option compose:prscUmlauts then can be typed like so:Meta R + q -> äMeta R + y -> üMeta R + p -> öMeta R + s -> ß(adding shift will create the corresponding uppercase variants)

@blinry I like the gb layout. And I use the compse key function to write "Umlaute"

I'm already remapping the caps lock key to control (or to escape if it's pressed once, via https://github.com/alols/xcape). And I'm using the print key as a compose key. Config:setxkbmap us altgr-intl -option ctrl:nocaps, compose:prscxcape -e "Control_L=Escape"

I'm also swapping the left alt and win keys, because I like to control my window manager using the key labelled "alt", but still need to use key combinations involving alt sometimes:setxkbmap -option swap_lalt_lwinWould you recommend any other remappings?

And finally: I have this weird habit of using only the left ctrl and shift keys. Also using the right keys symmetrically might be beneficial, ergonomically. How do you do this?

@blinryDepends how much other stuff you type. I tried that a long time ago but switched back because I type a lot of text (non programming) with umlauts etc. and I often type at other computers. The latter point is also the reason why I never dived into self built keyboards. ;-)

@blinry I’ve been using a US intl. layout for years now. Very good for programming, Umlauts are okay. Since I need symbols more than Umlauts it works better for me.I started using an ergonomic X-Bows keyboard last year, which has ctrl/shift/enter/backspace in the middle of the keyboard as well. I still mostly use the ones on the left hand side, but those in the middle *are* easier to reach.

@blinry i only switched a couple of keys to get the best of both worlds without retraining my typing https://bitboxer.de/2012/05/21/german-coding-keyboard-layout-for-macs/. And also capslock is escape for short press and ctrl otherwise

@blinry I switched and it didn't take me long at all to get used to it. Entering Umlauts is a bit of a hassle now but it's better than having to chord for every bracket

@blinry Did that for a long time, and configured my window manager to automatically switch between qwertz and qwerty depending on the programme. It was better, but still not optimal. In the end I switched to Neo, because it handles *both* applications better (programming AND typing german texts), so I obsoleted that mechanism...

@blinry I use caps lock to switch between hu and us layouts; us for programming and writing on English, hu is for writing in Hungarian or German.I can look up the exact settings if you're interested but a little bit of search can give you the answer. (I'm on the phone right now.)

@blinrySince nobody mentioned it (yet). There is the neo layout, which has good ergonomics. But it is hard to learn. I use it so much that any other layout feels really awkward.

@blinryI'm currently using us-international(on a standalone keyboard) and qwertz, because I have not replaced the keyboard of my t450s yet... using both is far more annoying than switching, I considered typing on us-international as far more enjoyable after a short time. Took me about 2-3 days to accustom to the new mappings for the Umlaute and most of the other signs "feel" like they make more sense while typing - 1/2

@blinry Build your own keyboard with your own preferred layout. (: That helped me a lot. #planck Pair programming should be doable with a second keyboard attached, too. On a regular laptop, there is a "useless“ keyboard, anyway. ^^
