Mocking FOSS advocates isn't funny. FOSS advocates are often victims of social exclusion and are also victims of injustice for arbitrary reasons. FOSS advocates spend a lot of time on the Internet because social exclusion is less violent on the Internet than in material interactivity.The basic reason why FOSS advocates are so loud is because they believe that because they're talking about something important, they'll say important things. They won't talk about important things on purpose so people will have to listen to them; instead, they won't understand that people won't listen to them while they're talking about something important, especially since people can do their own research since they're so much more capable. FOSS advocates are victims of social exclusion because they're doing something wrong, right?To see that a community that I respect will react more to a low-effort joke about FOSS advocates than to a post showing how these posts are violent towards victims of injustice in about every interaction will never cease to disappoint me.

@guillemot Despite the apparent success of FOSS there remains quite a lot of hostility towards Free Software. For example, try advocating Free Software on HN and see what kind of reactions result. Oddly enough much of the opposition comes from people who are unwittingly using FOSS every day and even relying upon it.The status of the software engineer, and especially the FOSS software engineer, is exceedingly low. Basically capitalism doesn't know how to value the kinds of things which a lot of FOSS people work on. Much of it is what people think of as the obscure plumbing, existing below the visible waterline of technology.

@bob @guillemot Wrong: Boomers don't know how to valuate FOSS. This stuff is basically a public commodity. FOSS is powering 80% of the internet. Entire programming languages, servers, some Databases, version control and other software people rely on everyday are FOSS. It may be that the language is well-intentioned in isolation, but to use it you have to believe that they can't help themselves and that they want to, i.e., that they couldn't possibly have different hopes or goals.I am a stubborn bastard because I think people should be and because my mind recoils at the thought of doing otherwise for the sake of not being excluded.
