Basic income is a concept that has existed in various forms, under various names, since the days of the Enlightenment. Political economist Philipe Van Parijs defined basic income as “an income paid by a government, at a uniform level and at regular intervals, to each adult member of society. The grant is paid, and its level is fixed, irrespective of whether the person is rich or poor, lives alone or with others, is willing to work or not.”

@LuigiEsq my biggest problem with UBI rn is it would just be a lifeline for capitalism. i'd rather that money be invested in resources like food, medical, housing ect than just giving people money.

@Los_Ingobernables_De_Jorts but the thing is, it shares a lot with utopian socialism at its core, so i'm not sure i agree. something like a NIT would definitely reinforce capitalism, however. A NIT is a conservative hand-wave.

@LuigiEsq UBI would be great in a socialist society where everyone's material needs were already met. if it was implemented today in the US it would be really bad i think

@Los_Ingobernables_De_Jorts agreed, which is why I think Andrew Yang is a hack and the current UBI push is dangerous
