So, furries - are we collectively just waiting on resolution of:https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-doc/issues/1256Before we can ditch Telegram en masse? Is giving out your phone # to a Russian company that had to give up encryption keys to the Kremlin worth it *just* for some goddamned stickers? You all are happily jumping on the Fediverse after seeing how bad the alternatives are, but why is Telegram an exception?

Also, the whole 'no FBI dudes allowed' thing is *really* ironic if you're still happily loving on Telegram, just sayin'. :/

Similarly, Discord users - *this* is the killer feature you want, right? Persistent voice channels?https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web/issues/3546(meta: https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web/issues/7487 )Beyond network effects (i.e. 'but my friends aren't there! (yet) ), are we really using two not-great apps because of two features? :/

And before I get the replies from people going 'bah, but Riot/Matrix sucks!'Yes, it does. But it can suck *less*. Or hey, if you've got better self-hostable, secure alternatives, let's boost those for recognition too.But Telegram and Discord need to be treated with the same disdain as Facebook & Twitter and need to die ASAP.

@Sir_Boops Yeah, and it's frustrating. That's why I'm angry, and I want to scream and shout that 'hey, you need to pay attention here'.Even if *one* person with a development mindset goes 'huh, we're 90% of the way there, I can help with the last 10%' for those two feature requests, then that excuse crumbles.

@kithop Kinda a weird double standard foss shit can be *almost* perfect™️ and no one will use it because it's not perfectBut closed source shit can be bug ridden to hell and everyone just writes it off as "Well, it's software!"

@Terrana The way I'm doing it: by deleting Telegram/Facebook/Twitter/etc. and telling people 'hey, if you want to contact me, here's how', and gently reminding people when they say 'oh but it doesn't have/do XYZ' when the alternatives *do* have XYZ.We all used to use MySpace, and look at it now. It can happen again!

@kithop Didn't they... never comply with the request for those encryption keys, though? Everything I've seen indicates that they don't even have the technical capability to provide encryption keys to third parties.(Which isn't to say that their encryption protocol is particularly secure, AFAIK, but last I checked, the FSB never managed to get their hands on any of those keys.)

@kd How do you know? Can you audit it? Can you host your own Telegram server? Rotate your own keys? :) Sure, the *client* might be open source, and you have a reasonable chance of E2E being fine... maybe.Maybe not: https://security.stackexchange.com/questions/49782/is-telegram-secure#49802They rolled their own crypto, which is a *Bad Sign*.

@kithop Oh, yeah, I've been aware of... well, exactly that security issue for a while, but I'm not inclined to outright ditch Telegram at a time when proliferation of good alternatives seems to be super low.But yeah, I guess I should figure out how to use Matrix and... be an early adopter, yeah?

@kd It's not even 'early' at this point when the French government is moving to it for all their internal messaging. It just doesn't have the features people expect, being more of a Slack-alike than a Discord-alike.

@kithop I mean, it's early in the sense that I don't personally know a ton of people who use it, compared to... the more popular, less secure options. <_<

@kd So let's change that! :) That's why I'm so pissed about this. If everyone dithers, nothing gets better. If we can all band together and host Mastodon/Pleroma/etc. furry instances, why not Matrix servers too?Everyone was ready to drop Facebook like a hot potato once they realised how bad it was.

@kithop Ugh, the whole Facebook thing is just... so unfortunate. Like, the fact that *that* site is *still* the most useful online venue for getting people organised for (entirely legal, relatively unthreatening, extremely public) political stuff is ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. But yeah, like, how does this Matrix thing *work*?

@kd https://about.riot.im/ <- client, similar to Discord it's a webapp (in this case node.js, like Mastodon) you can either log into on their servers, or install on your own (see: https://github.com/vector-im/riot-web )Or try an alternate client:https://matrix.org/docs/projects/try-matrix-now.htmlServers are mostly still the 'official' one, Synapse, written in Python:https://github.com/matrix-org/synapseInstall docs: https://github.com/matrix-org/synapse/blob/master/INSTALL.md

@kithop Oh, huh! …I'll probably try to find another server to sign up on, as I don't have any computers that I'd want to leave running 24/7. (Though how do you think a server for that would fare on something with low energy needs, like a Raspberry Pi or whatever?)

@kd If you're talking just for yourself and maybe a handful of other users, something like a RasPi I *believe* is fine, but the key here is having a (reasonably) static IP and such and upstream throughput in addition to having something on 24/7.I'm not *sure*, but the @cloud stuff *might* include Matrix?

@kithop @cloud @kd maybe pleroma chat could be an alternative if it's completed. It will most likely be more lightweight to host it

@succfemboi @kithop @kd we have pleroma sorted too 😉pleroma is a bit more straightforward to deploy. only a few commands and tweaking the config.the trick would be bridging to other services if desired. we arent aware of anything that speaks pleroma chat outside of plrroma itself.
