From the keynote of the 22nd European Police Congress:"I understand why the Darknet can be useful in autocratic systems. But in a free, open democracy, in my opinion, there is no legitimate benefit. If you use the Darknet, you are usually up to no good. This simple realization should also be reflected in our legal system."😡

@fribbledomAnd why, in free democratic countries, should authorities think that anyone who uses the Darknet is doing something bad? Is that legitimate?

@pinheiro Well, I'm sure there's a lot of shady stuff going on in the so called DarkNet.Because the simple truth is: whenever you give people freedom to communicate anonymously and/or privately, there's people who discuss, plan and operate illegal activities. But, the same also applies to regular letter post, parcels, or meeting up with others in private. However nobody would dare to question privacy of correspondence in those contexts... yet.

@fribbledom Funny how "private" gets translated to "dark" whenever authoritarians feel insecure.

@fribbledomAnd this is how you get autocratic systems, out of a free, open democracy.

@fribbledom we are a freedom respecting democracy and that's why if you don't show us everything you say and do on the internet then we will assume you are a criminal. Thanks for coming to my police talk.

@fribbledomIn Portugal, 45 years ago, if there were more than 2 people talking on any given street, it would mean that there were conspiracy plans going on...

@fribbledom I understand why the freedom of association can be useful in autocratic systems. But in a free, open democracy, in my opinion, there is no legitimate benefit. If you gather three people or more without registering with the authorities, you are usually up to no good. /s
