@animeirl @Rude @roka @clarkycat @matrix >or interact with you is not censorshipIs taking away someone else's ability to interact with you censorship? Like blocking you from taking to someone on a website or taking to someone on the phone?

@sjw @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat your question is overly vague. Are you talking about a telecommunications provider blocking someone from using a phone on their service or an individual blocking someone's number on their personal phone? The latter is clearly not censorship.

@animeirl @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat The admin if the phone company deciding you shouldn't be able to talk to people and they shouldn't be able to talk to you because they don't like the neighborhood they live in.

@sjw @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat Phone companies are common carriers so that would clearly be censorship. A website is not a common carrier so a website blocking you is not censorship.

@animeirl @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat Depends. You could argue that website is a public forum and thus blocking blocking an entire instance on the grounds that "Their instance description russled my jimmies." is in fact censorship.

@sjw @animeirl @matrix @roka @clarkycat Daily reminder since nobody seems to know what words mean anymore.Censor - Noun1. an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds. 2. any person who supervises the manners or morality of others.3. an adverse critic; faultfinder.4. (in the ancient Roman republic) either of two officials who kept the register or census of the citizens, awarded public contracts, and supervised manners and moralsAny authority curating content is by definition practising censorship.

@sjw @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat You could also argue that your house is a public forum and you have to let in anyone who want's to visit. Both would be terrible arguments though.

@animeirl @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat Not really because you house is private property and not available to the general public. There are several laws protecting that. However, a website doesn’t have those same protections. Additionally, it is available to the general public. It’s also not that terrible of an argument either. @sjw @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat Both your assertions about the nature of websites are completely false, sorry. A website is private property and is not necessarily available to the general public. If you're going to try to bring legal protections into this conversation then there's no point in talking further since legally people are allowed (and in some cases required) to ban people from websites.

@animeirl @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat >A website is private propertyHighly debatable>and is not necessarily available to the general publicThat’s not the case here because I, a member of the general public, can access it. >If you’re going to try to bring legal protections into this conversation then there’s no point in talking further Why not? >legally people are allowed (and in some cases required) to ban people from websites. This isn’t a case of them banning someone from their site. Not sure why you’d being that up

@sjw @animeirl @matrix @Rude @roka @clarkycat I think @clarkycat ‘s definition is more accurate: “Censorship is really the prevention of communication between two or more willing parties.” I’d make a slight change to it, though: “Censorship is the prevention of communication between **any two willing people**.”When someone is trying to tell someone else something, whether it be by text, voice chat, smoke signals, etc., it isn’t censorship if the person who sent the message cancels sending it, nor if the person who it was for decides to not receive it. But if any of the middlemen of this communication prevent the communication — whether it be the forum or fedi instance administrator, isp, or the guy you paid to make the smoke signals — then I think that’s censorship.

@sjw@neckbeard.xyz @animeirl@social.homunyan.com @Rude@pl.kys.moe @roka@pl.smuglo.li @matrix@gameliberty.club I'm a slow replier, I'll just put everything here instead of spamming leaves on the thread tree. Sorry for the wall of text.I didn't actually see anyone in this thread crying about free speech or censorship (at least until after the fact when you brought up the point). This thread seemed to be just pointing out the use of instance-wide blocks to preemptively "protect" users from engaging with others simply because a domain had a particular name and description. There was no real prior interaction that we had seen and a refusal to elaborate when asked a two-word question. Censorship vs. Free Speech? No. Prejudice? Sure. And I think the "censorship = preventing you from saying what you want" is incomplete. Censorship is really the prevention of communication between two or more willing parties. This case is not censorship, as the original poster was withdrawing his consent of communication with the blocked domain's users, and the blocking admin-curator enforced it systemically. It gets murky as to whether or not the other members of the blocking instance would have consented as well, but assuming the instance has enough history of blocking that another user would make it his go-to response, I presume they would have. This is the admin providing curation to their users as a service that they likely desire. It's all above-board.That said, it was a bot's follow request. Why not just reject it? Why resort to instance-blocking simply based on an instance description?
