My department operates very much on a cowboy model: you have one person who knows a given thing (huge prod codebase, server cluster, etc) and you just pray to your god they don't quit. My boss actually told me he doesn’t want teams in charge of things, and would rather have large systems/projects maintained by a single person. Apparently this is because a past team-based effort went very poorly, and ended with someone having a blade server thrown at them during a disagreement in the datacenter.

During said previous team effort, many of the sysadmins didn't get along. It became a problem when one sysadmin would repeatedly kill the SSH sessions of other sysadmins.
