Music, for me, helps me process, understand and pulls me outside of myself.

@viciousviscosity Impossible. easier to change my head. Sometimes watching fragmovies and Citation Needed/Tech Dif podcast helps. Talking to certain people is also good, but that can be dangerous.

@viciousviscosity Music, hard mental/physical activity, or, in extreme cases, just bitingly strong cold for a few minutes

@JenkarGoing for a run or a ride certainly keeps me in touch with the physical world - and I can only imagine the cold being shockingly effective.

@viciousviscosity Yep!A shame very cold places aren't available all the time - this isn't really something doable at any time save middle of winter :c

@viciousviscosity Still need more practice, but Holotropic Breathwork is an amazing tool to experience a non-ordinary state of consciousness. Way beyond just getting outside ones own head. It's getting inside a different state of consciousness.

@viciousviscosity Well, I've always used books and movies for escapism. So I tend to read sci-fi and fantasy genre books. Not that I don't think there is other good fiction, I just...don't want the real world. The point of escapism is to get away from reality and get out of my own head. It makes me feel young and untroubled again.

@viciousviscosity I try and find something that offers a different fantasy-like headspace. Maybe a good sci-fi movie, for example. Anything to propel my thoughts into another universe of sorts.

@viciousviscosity I watch a lot of TV. Even if the people aren't real, I empathize. I think about them and their problems.Sometimes I come back better able to think about my own stuff. Sometimes, I come back just not thinking too hard about my stuff. Both are useful.

@viciousviscosity Finding anything else to get absorbed by, to knock the needle out of the groove, so to speak.Could be music, could be meditation, could be work, could be fun. Could be physical or mental. Just has to be different, and engaging. (Thanks to vinyl hipsters for extending the shelf life of the needle/groove metaphor!)

@viciousviscosity Depends on the day. Reading a good book (new or an old favorite), videogames, sometimes the right movie. Best for me is a *long* walk that takes me away from people (not always an option, sadly). Finding a fun programming challenge works well if I'm not exhausted. It has to be something interesting, difficult but doable, and *NOT* directly connected to work. With luck that'll let me get to flow state for long enough to re-center.

@viciousviscosity I got really into drawing at one point actually and wish I was doing that more now because it has this amazing weird residual effect where your brain imagines drawing everything you look at and it's oddly calming
