I love it when, after 7 hours of troubleshooting, it's determined that root of the problem is a configuration on the F5 that would NEVER have worked, yet somehow did for weeks because "nobody" made a change today sometime between 1:30 and 1:50PM MST.

@mike I feel your pain! I once spent 3 WHOLE days (not 8 hrs/day - I’m talking 72 hrs straight) troubleshooting a failed sat link in Iraq.I could not get it to work. Needless to say the chiefs were not happy.Turns out some idiot in the UK has turned off the receiver for the weekend and went home. The dude actually got jailed for putting a live operation in jeopardy.

@kevYouch! Thankfully it wasn't THAT important, since we had a workaround, but it was still something the higher-ups wanted fixed ASAP. I love how they want things fixed at all costs, and then they go home to their families and relax while everyone else works the problem.

@mike @kev Oh yeah... I remember my boss messed up one day leaving me with a pile of shiz and then yelling to my face “What the hell do you want from me? Figure it out!”My reaction surprised the beejeesus out of him because I got up out of my chair, got my jacket, told him “Its not in my contract. You figure it out.” and walked away. He was still yelling some nonsense while I was leaving so I turned around and said “Talk down to me. See where that takes you. I bid you a good day.” and I left.

@mike Agreed! Had one last year where whole team tackled why a live ESXi host with database servers would randomly reboot... till at the 9th hour a tech finally said they were testing a new host and “may” have had other hosts consoles up and rebooted the wrong one.

@aetios @clacke @MG @AndrzejL @TheCraiggers @mike @TechZerker F5 make a number of devices, but when people refer to “an F5” they usually mean a load balancer, as that’s their main tool.So you can have 5 web servers plugged into an F5 and when someone visits your URL, the traffic is distributed between the 5 servers. They do much more than this, but that’s the basics.
