Verdict on the latest gen Fire 8 HD tablet, after about 24 hours with it: it's an Android tablet. Decent, but not great, but excellent value for the money and more than meets my admittedly fairly basic needs. It definitely requires a few tweaks to make it more than just a fancy Kindle, though. Install F-droid and Google Play, and definitely use a custom launcher (need Launcher Hijack to override the Amazon launcher). Mostly, these are minor tweaks if you are familiar with sideloading on Android.

@ink_slinger... used as a simple media tablet?

@hinterwaeldler Essentially, yes. Basic browsing, some games (handles a resource intensive game like Asphalt 8 way better than expected). I haven't actually used it for video yet, but I assume it'll be passable. Display isn't true HD, but I'm not sure that matters much on an 8" screen.

@ink_slinger Did you get rid of Alexa and the ads on the start screen? There's not a lot of cheap tablets any more, I don't know what I'd do if I ever wanted to upgrade.

@hinterwaeldler I never had the ads on the start screen. I wonder if that's on the US version only? I've heard about it, but they're simply not there on mine. Alexa is basically useless in Canada, too, so that's not been an issue. I didn't disable it, but haven't actually used it, either.

@ink_slinger@hinterwaeldlerI've heard about the ads too but I've never seen one. I have also read that they only are a thing in the US.I've had mine for about a year, I don't use it much but it's a decent device. I watched all of "The Grand Tour" on it and it performs well. What I am most impressed with is the case, best tablet case I've ever used.

@FssOfDeath @hinterwaeldler Oh, that's interesting. I didn't buy the official case, because I had a neoprene sleeve kicking around from an old 7" tablet that died a while back. The 8" Fire juuuuust fits. Doesn't have a kickstand for watching video, but I've got a Bluetooth keyboard that doubles as a stand, so that'll work for now.

@hinterwaeldler @FssOfDeath I downloaded the most recent season in Bojack Horseman from Netflix, to watch on my flight tomorrow, so I guess I'll find out soon how it handles video.I should probably download some videos for my kid, too, although I think the inflight entertainment has a good selection of children's shows.
