This sounds interesting. I've heard some "complaints" about the more traditional look Mint has though I've never felt that way about it myself. I wonder if this kind of option will change people's mind about the DE or will they still be "turned off" because it's too derivative?"Linux Mint 19.1 Will Feature a 'Modern' Desktop Layout - OMG! Ubuntu!"https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2018/10/linux-mint-19-1-new-panel-layout

@mike to be honest I think people just like to hate on mint. On the other hand, any time I use cinnamon on mint or another distro, icing task manager is the first change I make. So they're making good decisions in my mind.

@timapple @mike People will always bash on things that popular and considred mainsteam and "too easy" to use. :)I guess we all have to choose if we want to be cool or get shit done.

@jason @hund @mike @timapple I've always preferred the easier to use distros - *buntu, eOS, Mint, Zorin etc. This isn't because I'm a "noob" (I know I could run Arch), but because I want to get sh*t done. I _don't_ want to be a sysadmin on my personal machines.Horses for courses, as they say. :-)

@kev@jason @hund @mike @timappleI totally understand this line of thinking and it depends on your state of mind when you are getting into one distro or another. If I were getting into it right now I wouldn't go with arch. I continue using arch though because I'm so familiar with it now that it is really easy for me and I have no issues.

@kelbot absolutely. I'd never berate anyone for their choice of distro. The fact we have so many to choose from is amazing to me. Like I said, horses for courses. :-)I realise "horses for courses" probbaly isn't a thing outside of the UK. @kevFor sure. If timing was different I likely would have ended up preferring completely different distros. I even use multiple distros now for different types of machines and uses. @jason @hund @mike @timapple

@kelbot@timapple @mike @hund @kevAfter 14-15 years of being a Linux user, exclusivly for the first 10 years or so, I have learned to appreciate how good (and bad) some distros areI prefer Arch Linux with debian based distros as a strong second place, I am slowly migrating family members away from Arch installs just to reduce my admin time these days I used to avoid Ubuntu and Ubuntu based Distros, but Elementary, Pop!_OS and to a lesser degree KDE-Neon are changing this as they really are very good distros There are however still one or two distros that I would not touch with a bargepole due to historical issues I have had with the developers attitudes

@hund I've been using Linux for almost exactly 20 years now, and I'm running Mint 19. I've toyed with Arch, and occasionally I make forays into RPM based systems, but for the most part I'm on a Debian/Ubuntu based system. I hop around DEs whenever I get bored with my current setup, but I'm comfortable with that foundation. If I was younger and started using Linux at a time when Arch actually existed, maybe thing would be different. @jason @kev @timapple @kelbot

@mike@kelbot @timapple @kev @hundI find that when I get bored I hop OS's (the more obscure the better) or go minimal for a while. For quite a while a few years ago my email client was the mail command using imaps and msmtp, fun days.

@jason My most obscure is an OS called Oberon. I ran it for a couple weeks as a school project. Was kind of fun, and there were some interesting ideas. I don't do that much these days though.@kelbot @timapple @kev @hund

@mikeI remembered a "project oberon" from about 5 - 6 years ago, iirc it had a plan9 rio look to it, I was not aware it was a reimplementation of the earlier OberonOS you mention.@hund @kev @timapple @kelbot

@timappleWithout explicitly naming the distros I will confirm thatThe first one I was heavily involved in and personal history with, which ended badly, while it is a good distro I have moved onThe second one has a Dev with a history of dropping the mic and leaving projects so I don't trust the longevity of those projects.@kev @hund @mike @kelbot

@rcramalho In my personal (and admittedly extremely limited experience) there's some variation in the file system, system utilities are different (though similar), and scheduled vs. rolling release. Arch actually has a much more detailed comparison on their wiki.https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_compared_to_other_distributions#Debian@hund@linuxrocks.online @jason @kev @timapple @kelbot
