In-stream previews of links have been requested for a while. I've got it working, but not sure if the horizontal (large image) style should be kept, or everything should be forced into the the more compact style 🤔

@Gargron The empty space to the left looks weird IMO

@gargron hmm, why not do it on link hover? also handles multiple links gracefully

Okay never mind I found something better. All non-interactive previews will have the compact style (image on the left, title/source on the right), while all interactive previews will have the clickable 16:9 thumbnail only, so they'll be more consistent with native media

@Gargron My personal vote is for compact style - what's the point of expanded view if you're not going to be expanding things

@Gargron any fix for the unneeded preview that shows when talking to pleroma users sometimes?

@wakest @Gargron if it helps debug it at all, it looks like it's considering the mentions from Pleuroma to be links. Also, when someone replies to themself in Pleuroma with a CW, it appears in Mastodon as if they are mentioning themself.

@Gargron more compactness please. scrolling through twitter is too much "rich media" these days. also i'm kind of worried about how these will interact with links to statuses -- will those get og previews too? this was twitter's slippery slope to quote tweets

@Gargron that seems like a good solution. Would it be possible to also hide the URL in the body of the toot, to make it look cleaner?

@Gargron what will you use to populate the preview? tw:*, og:* meta tags? Mastodon specific tags? Something else?

@Gargron I enjoy the large images. I feel they are more identifiable and easier to spot if I’m scrolling back to find something.Plus, since it’s been a common format for a while, publishers sometimes add useful information to them.

@Gargron I think that videos should be large, so you can see the thumbnails and websites small, so that you don't clutter up the TL.
