@elle aaaahhhhhh>Candle salad was known as an easy way to get kids to eat fruit because of its unusual appearance. It was also considered a child-friendly introduction to cooking because of its simple construction.

@smashriel you wouldn't BELIEVE how much people in the 30s-probably still now, put mayo on EVERYTHING. they wanted to figure out every single thing u could possibly make with mayo, gelatin, and microwaves. edibility not required.

@elle In the UK, we had the Cheese and Pineapple Hedgehog. Famous traditional UK party dish of the 80s. If your party didn't have one, it wasn't a party.

@CornishRepublicanArmy @elle I think it was a famous staple of various "party food" books, possibly a hang over from the UK going wild for pineapples as like, luxury items. I remember as a kid pawing over various party food books from the 50s/60s.

@elle ah, the article says "Candle salad was known as an easy way to get kids to eat fruit because of its unusual appearance." maybe that explains why anyone would eat that.. they gave it to innocent people who wouldn't know yet what this actually looks like. :thaenkin: :thaenkin: :thaenkin:

@elle wow, I found this in german wikipedia about what people in the 50ies served at parties: it's a mushroom made from an egg and a tomato. looks really nice! https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fliegenpilzei I'm falling down the wikipedia hole of food in funny shapes now..

@distel wait this is the same exact thing as the candle salad but replacing the pineapple and banana for more realistic ingredients and in a much better configuration

@elle @mxsiege My family unironically loves this kinda cheesy party food. We did it for my sister's birthday this month. We had the cocktail sausages and the bowls of crisps and the sausage rolls, the whole spread!
