Last time (also first time) I tried it out was pretty much a year ago (https://twitter.com/espectalll/status/925421505571446784), as Hipster 2017.10 was announced. It was really cool to see OpenSolaris once again and with #modern stuff, but it was missing a lot of stuff: no Java 9+, no Virtualbox, no NetBeans, no Python 3.5+, no Rust, etc. However, many of my complaints seem to have been fixed, so let's give it a try.

OK guys which language I should be doing it this time? Last time it was Catalan, do we go for something aesthetical like Japanese or maybe something more meme-ish like Russian?

I could probably survive using this, if my hardware is supported. But I still don't know why would I want to run any Solaris over a Linux or BSD, honestly :crying:

@espectalll if doesn't make any sense to run Solaris other than on production sites like stability is a must, i.e. car factories. And even there it's loosing its market.

oh hey I found the official OpenIndiana theme, Nimbushttps://github.com/OpenIndiana/nimbusCurrent version: https://github.com/OpenIndiana/nimbus/archive/0b4a93f240ee299aaf7029438944ec7156d0eea8.tar.gz (yes, it's the latest commit, not v1.0)

Managed to compile the thing manually, had to do the commands at https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/blob/629d1a31d253866b24db6bd336219300520c0c8a/components/desktop/nimbus/Makefile#L41, then the usual ./configure --prefix /usr && make && sudo make install (at least for Void)

Also I just noticed the MATE panel backgrounds were missing because for some reason they're not inside the Nimbus source code. Well, here they are: https://github.com/OpenIndiana/oi-userland/tree/oi/hipster/components/desktop/mate/mate-panel/files

@espectalll It’s kinda impressive how they managed to keep the same look for all those years, even though what they are using under the hood changed so much. This is Cinnamon instead of GNOME 2 these days, right?

@js MATE, and this is the first version using GTK+3 on OpenIndiana if I recall correctly. It still has some issues but it mostly works just like back in the OpenSolaris days

@espectalll Well, you basically can't properly use Linux anymore without systemd, or else things will be broken…

@espectalll Experience. A *lot* of patching is necessary to have a system without systemd. Easier to just not run an operating system that promotes this crap.

@js I've already talked about this, I don't mind forks and it's mostly just having a fork of Systemd's logind (elogind) in whatever init you want to use
