I don't understand why anyone would choose to publish on Medium, a site where the average user will absolutely not see your article because they've already used up their three free monthly views.(If you know how to use an element blocker to get rid of the overlay, or how to open a link in an incognito window, you are not an average user.)

@noelle The only people I know that publish on Medium are theory-obsessed "marxists" who have no idea what the term "human cost" means and support chinese capitalism and imperialism. I made an account just to heckle them.

@noelle I didn't even know that was a thing on Medium... don't think I ever viewed enough articles there to hit the paywall.

@noelle I started publishing on Medium long before that bullshit started. I haven't actively published on there in two years or soI've occassionaly thought about putting something new up there just because if the first article I've through of writing in months, and I"m not regularly writing stuff any long, it would make more sense to go with a place I have an established account the start another new account that will barely get used.So far, I've always decide the place shit and not worth it

@fradleybox wordpress.com, blogger.com, etc. Better yet, host your own. Don't let a monolith profit from your content.

@noelle This only applies to the "featured" stories picked by Medium.Although I don't like Medium, experience has shown that articles I publish on Medium get way more readers than the ones I publish on my personal blog. The site has an ease of use and a network effect that keeps people publishing there.

@noelle Medium is such trash these days. Especially if you wish to use your own domain, you have to fork over $75! Insane. As you have said, go with WordPress.com or host your own blog.

@noelle Not disagreeing with the lack of understanding, but I've been able to click the popup away since.. quite a while. They're nagging, but not restricting usage. Or maybe that's a *secret* feature of my default settings uBlock Origin?

@aadilayub You say that, but I get a modal saying "hey you should sign up" every time I visit the site. The average user won't know you can dismiss that and keep reading, especially since the "you only get three this month" modal is nearly identical (and probably deliberately so).

@wink That's a different but nearly identical modal. Some articles have the "three per month" limit and some don't.

@noelle I republish my stuff on Medium regularly and it’s an income stream (small one) for my business. It’s all free on my site though. Plus medium does bring a few new list subscribers.I never exclusively publish to Medium though.

@noelle I just read the stuff that's not behind the paywall. I also wish Medium would disclose how much of the monthly fee goes to the writers behind the wall. Maybe none of it does. I have no idea.

@noelle Favorite part of that experience is when I get blocked trying to reference a two year old article I've already read. 🙄

@noelle Those modals only pop up on featured stories. Sadly, a lot of the good articles that are shared by lots of people are the featured ones. Many of the people and publications I read/follow don't get featured and hence, don't have that modal. Here's an example: https://medium.com/@getsiempo/a-new-space-race-for-technology-%EF%B8%8F-c6a729b9b723

@noelle That's strange. I really don't know anyone who treats that modal that way, and most of my friends irl are not technical. They're the type who don't even know how to install a launcher on their phones (or what a launcher even is).

@noelle Yeah, medium absolutely needs to get rid of that misleading-as-hell modal. It's screwing them over by making people think that they paywall everything.Ev is doing some good stuff (like replacing the ad model with micro-donations directly to authors) but his team hasn't really figured out that by doing that they need to ditch the UI design habits that go along with normal publisher-oriented paywalls & ad-supported systems.
