I feel a bit sad now 'cause I saw there are still some Mastodon servers with versions below 2.0 out there. I don't know how to help them...

@Gargron A script to export the db and import it to a newer version of the platform?it would allow them to stand-up a separate server and simply move the DB over?It might make it easier for some to fix their migration issues.

@millenomi The admin e-mail address was added in later versions, and even then not everyone has entered it.

@Gargron Some code to nix them out of the Fediverse or exchange passed messages with "please contact your admin!"

Remember that 2 years anniversary of Mastodon blog post? I put a time table of most notable features in there: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/10/mastodons-2-year-anniversary/So servers that are on 1.2.2, that version came out in April 2017. Imagine how much stuff they're missing, to say nothing of performance and security fixes

@thegibson I could write a bash script to upgrade to the latest version from whatever they're on, but what's the point if the admins aren't paying attention or aren't interested or whatever leads to being so far behind

@Gargron yeah, not sure how to defeat that problem without building a self-updating/patching solution...and that's a whole other herd of cats...The best you can do is make the process easier for them...Auto updating system could be good going forward, but people would complain about that too for sure.it's not a zero sum game...

@thegibson I can't imagine how auto-updating could work, also in regards to multiple app servers

@thegibson To be honest I'm not sure if it wouldn't be possibly to simply checkout straight to 2.6.0rc1 and run rails db:migrate. It'd take a bit but I think it might just work

@Gargron I agree. It would not be trivial.Could be as "simple" as your bash script getting called by cron job though.

@Gargron I know I have had issues with the 2.5 upgrade, and due to RL commitments haven't dug in to fix them.If it's that simple, then that's awesome.I'll clone Hackers.town tomorrow and test if you'd like.

@thegibson Is it related to PostgreSQL 9.4? I added a slow fallback for that in 2.6.0 but it's really slow. Like really slow.

@thegibson You should at least jump to 2.4.5, it's just security updates. And set contact username in settings

@gargron Easy. Don't federate with older versions. As long as you give them a few months for the deadline, you can say "you were warned". :blobwink:

@Gargron put a rule in place that Mast vX will only sync with >= v(X-1). Bump major as appropriate.

@mperham Their version has little negative impact on our systems, that's not my concern. It's just a pity because their users (and some are still active!) get such a comparatively bad experience.

@Gargron maybe, in that case, it would be nice to have on the page where all instances are listed a warning that some are not up to date ... but that's also a risk because people with bad intentions will know that this or that one is vulnerable

@Gargron That will not help for the actual problem, but for future ones : maybe a regular reminder option (active by default) to all admins & moderators could help to prevent this situation.Like, if the instance is 1 version late, you get 1 reminder/week (email or/and on screen). If it's 2 then 2/week, etc. This can become pretty annoying so either they do the upgrade to get rid of it, or they deactivate the option and you don't have to worry because it means they don't give a shit.

@Gargron If we're at 2.6.0 now, they're missing out on exactly +2.3.8 of stuff.
