I've been reading a lot about radicalisation on the internet (mras to white nationalists, disaffected muslim youth to jihadists) and what that means for leftwing groups. Does the internet radicalize the left? On one hand the increase of "communists" and "socialists" online is remarkable but how much of it translates to political action? While a more complete answer requires empirical research I just wanted to know peoples thought re: does the internet supress leftist action?

Maybe I've bought in too much to the "clicktivism" rhetoric. Not sure. I guess the question is: if there are so many more communists now than there were even 5 years ago, why isn't there more backlash from liberal media? The Right is always striking against "leftists" as a whole but it's more of a dismissal from the center left. But again, maybe I don't have a clear read on this.

@Ttle yes, but also the inherent humanism in leftism makes it more susceptible to depression, cynicism and despair, which is why i believe we need to elevate aspects of culture that empower leftists and leftist thought

@doggy_omega You may be right, the reaction of the left is more often despair than anger which has it's avantages and disadvantages. I guess it depends but I often feel that the gamification of interaction (i often see references to favs and boosts and their equivalents across platforms as endorphin buttons, which while a joke is often very true) might not make the internet the appropriate platform for empowerment. Not that I can think of a better alternative.

@Ttle i think the technology itself is mostly neutral, it's how we utilize it that decides it's effect.

@doggy_omega I wonder about this. Maybe not capital T Technology but digital technologies. I specifically think about whether digital technologies we perceive as "good" would be pacifying and isolating. I worry that this is what we often see today.
