i fucking love science**markers of technological progress that when looked at as a whole havent really materially improved the living conditions of the average person in any way

like yea vaccines are cool and shit but i'm in my late 20s, science leading directly to technology being deployed to materially improve peoples lives hasnt happened even once in my lifetime, its all rent seeking and surveillance now

@thatcosmonaut This is gonna a big overgeneralization but I feel like a lot of that exicitment surrounding the internet in the 90s/aughts have completely died off because the internet just ended up repeating a lot of the same exact power structures that previously existedGamergate, harassment, capitalism

@thatcosmonaut @OhMyGodMyKnees the internet has so much potential to enrich our lives but instead it's just a giant feedback loop for all of our worst behaviors

@thatcosmonaut personally I'm very lucky because since I didn't post that much before like 2 months ago on here I've managed to avoid the worst but a lot of the big corporate sites weirdly feel me with a sense of sadness(Instagram for instance)

@BDA @OhMyGodMyKnees yea and it doesnt have to be that way either, the corporate internet encourages those negative behaviors to maximize engagement. one of the best ways to get people glued to your platform is to give them tools to stir up drama. look at how much healthier interactions on mastodon are, its because the platform doesnt profit from encouraging us to jump down each others throats

@thatcosmonaut @BDA after about 3 months on Twitter daily I actually started to wonder if the site was directly encouraging people to be asses

@OhMyGodMyKnees i was around in the early days of the internet and it really was exciting, people getting together and organically forming communities around interests. then it got fully co-opted by giant media corporations and we shunted everyone into huge spaces where they have zero control over their communities, funded everything through ad-fueled surveillance and let the worst people on earth freely mobilize to poison every interaction

@erosdiscordia @thatcosmonaut for a while when I went on Instagram I felt a weird sense of sadness going on my explore page shuffling, looking at the thousands upon thousands of posts, essentially digitally swimming through trash that goes on forever and forever

@erosdiscordia @thatcosmonaut everything's just endless screenshots of Twitter owns and pictures of models with better lives than you and unfunny memes and YouTubers all at once and its a weird feeling of smallness

@OhMyGodMyKnees @erosdiscordia i remember a time when you could run out of posts to look at, and you would be like oh thats it, thats all the posts, time to do something else. every platform gives you access to an endless firehose of information now because time you spend on the platform is money to them

@OhMyGodMyKneesOh God, the explore page. It's like a bottomless pit of desperation and meaninglessness. I think it's calculated to feel that way--so people keep scrolling, looking for meaning, and latch on even harder to interacting with their "friends" because it feels like a bridge over a shit river.@thatcosmonaut

@OhMyGodMyKnees @thatcosmonaut the internet is a lot like IRL in that PoC and the LGBTQ+ community makes a place cool and then it gets gentrified and everything costs 5x as much for 1/5th the quality
