@seagazelle rock music was developing reactionary strains to the prevalence of disco because cultural dominance was shifting away from straight white dudes creeping on teens and toward lgbt / people of color / proud femmes which came to a head at "disco demolition night" at comiskey park where people went there to destroy disco records and it became a hideous reactionary mob 1/

@seagazelle BuuuUUUt already for a couple years there was a club in the chicago loop called the Warehouse which had the distinction of having an all ages night where a racially diverse crowd of largely lgbt teens were able to have a safe place to go and dance. One of the first people spinning there was Frankie Knuckles who was all types of experimental in working with breakbeats as well as low-end sequencers which were available for cheap, and therefor more accessible 2/

@seagazelle this experimentation would come to be known as House Music named after the place where it was born, and while the Warehouse eventually closed, Chicago has had House music continuously, which effectively was Disco operating underground and creating and reinventing itself continuously for allt he years people were smugly claiming Disco Is Dead. In 1982 the warehouse doubled its cover charge and Frankie Knuckles went and started his own club the Power Plant 3/

@seagazelle Now what's really important here I THINK is the eager adoption of low-end sequencers which would eventually become legendary tools. The 808 was somewhat panned when it was first introduced because people were critical of the relatively flat sound compared to actual live drums, which helped it be available for cheap. Similarly, the 303 drum sequencer was something of a commercial flop, so again, snatched up by house people who wanted to make something and it was there for the getting.

@erosdiscordia @seagazelle imo it needs to be stressed that when that boring dipshit Steve Dahl did his Disco Demolition (1979), House was already happening (1977)

@erosdiscordia @seagazelle so like the materialist aspect of house music also makes me hollar as a marxist, it was built with the material conditions available to people who worked within the limitations of those material conditions

@erosdiscordia @seagazelle & it's basically been the driving force of dance music since, though Detroit took all of that in different directions with Techno

@erosdiscordia @seagazelle So bringin it back to repressing emotions and being drunk and channeling them poorly, a couple weeks ago some young woman came up to me wanting to dance while some electroswing was on and instead i started yelling about how Cajmire was using swing hooks in 1992 with U Got Me Up
