ok here's my hot take today: we don't need to be "saved" by solar or giant batteries or something else we haven't invented yet. We already have nuclear energy. keep developing it, sure. and keep developing solar and wind and other fun technologies, but why are we letting nuclear fade from the conversation?

@baronnarcveldt the fossil fuel lobby successfully infiltrated Greenpeace and convinced the world that nuclear was bad, combined with 10 mile Island and Chernobyl.

@lunch yeah, this is a tough hurdle, and I resent that it's political. It's so clearly a good option if well regulated

@baronnarcveldt it's by far the safest and cleanest way of producing large amounts of power we have.

@baronnarcveldt Nuclear has to be off the table, as long as we are operating in an environment of privately owned and operated utilities. The only "safe" method of operating fission plants is requiring an independent agency to operate them (like the air traffic control system). E

@richardbmcgee yeah, there's no denying that standards are required, and that capitalism will kill us all

@baronnarcveldt To be perfectly honest, coal plants are more dangerous than nuclear plants. The danger, however, is spread out over decades, rather than concentrated in a calamitous singular event.

@richardbmcgee I think there's a misconception about the safety of nuclear plants. Their safety factor is already regulated to be 13 in the USA (schools and bridges are like 5). Calamitous events are kind of 1 in a million. There is a legitimate concern with waste management though. Which I think we can improve on like with everything else

@baronnarcveldt @richardbmcgee I used to work at a factory that made containers for nuclear waste, actually, and we know how to dispose of it but nobody wants to pay for it to be done properly

@baronnarcveldt almost like it isn't the best way to run a society where people have no choice about what is necessary.
