@maloki I was thinking about steps users can take to self-empower, and I can't get past the idea that everyone should set up a server.Maybe in school, or something. Its just that *I* understand the power of servers. I read logs, I have root. I feel that experience eludes most, so it feels like they need their web and other services handed down from the clergy.I don't think most should maintain a server, but everyone should be allowed to see "inside".

@maiki @maloki In the future, every device will be a server.

@bhaugen @maiki @maloki Well, the downside of portable devices being servers is that it becomes easy and perfectly legal for border security agents to make full copies of your data since it's all on your device and not in the cloud.Maybe there will be some kind of backup to a remote machine, delete local data and restore later mechanism that will help people avoid this situation.

@christobal @njoseph @maiki @maloki Maidsafe has very interesting ideas but it's difficult for me to know what is real and what is not.Are they using their own system to coordinate the development of their own system yet? That is increasingly my sign of seriousness. Also unclear how they are financed. @cristobal do you know?

@bhaugenThey did a crowdsale long ago that made them a decent amount, also some later crowdfundings.Unsure what you mean using their own system for development? The network is still routinly wiped between alphas so their not hosting their dev there@njoseph @maiki @maloki

@christobal @njoseph @maiki @maloki Scuttlebutt seems to be a leader in coordinating development of scuttlebutt by using scuttlebutt, to the extent of rolling their own decentralized version of github, git-ssb.ActivityPub can also do that using all the various versions in the fediverse, but I am not sure how much it is actually done. Is anybody using GitPub yet?We are trying to do that in our in-process P2P economic network.

@maiki I get what you're saying. This labour is real, most folks are unaware of it, and somebody's got to do it. Somebody who can be trusted, is accountable, is in dialogue with the folks that don't do it.But for myself, I've not seen a command line in 25 years and don't want to, EVER. Root user? Logs. NO way - life is too short. Users of tools need to be served, well, not to be devs and sysops. Life matters - and if good folks are willing to surveil the logs - thank goodness!@maloki @bhaugen

@maiki I'll run a server - when it's a plugin box sits in my bedroom runs invisibly like a heating boiler. When there's a libre OS & open apps ecosystem that auto installs & auto updates on my MacBook (!) or iPad (!) like App Store apps. Life & work are hard to configure without configuring & supporting a server too. Sew my own clothes, grow my own veg, make my own tools? Nope. Things to do! Waiting for the day of server-in-a-box, P2P appstore - & local dev on the block? Soon?@maloki @bhaugen

@bhaugen I think there are devices like that, including the FreedomBone.I'm hesitant to run a server at my home, because I have enemies that will harm me and I don't want to give them any geo info.I mention that, because its something we'll need to figure out, for those at risk (and *everyone* is at risk).

@mike_hales @bhaugen @maiki @clayton -- this seems interesting for Drutopia, websites that are not hosted at all... but hard to imagine the business model since the source is open and easily accessed and there is no hosting...

@Matt_Noyes @mike_hales @maiki @clayton Re business model: think devices, communication networks, energy. Or food? Housing? Care?

@bhaugen @mike_hales @maiki @clayton It seems like Beaker could in principal work for complex sites like those created in Drupal... is that right? If so, coop web developers could create templates for people who are not in a position to create their own from scratch...

@Matt_Noyes @mike_hales @maiki @clayton I have no experience with Beaker. Would be interested to learn how interactive a page you could put on it.

@bhaugen AFAIK a website built and managed in Beaker can have any form that can be coded in HTML/CSS. But interactive? I dunno. Java? Dunno. It just so happens I'm interested in pages written in Markdown - so, static pages and very simple site structure for me. @Matt_Noyes @maiki @clayton

@mike_hales @Matt_Noyes @maiki @clayton @richdecibels Part 2:One quick tip with dat that it's super easy to set up custom urls for your dat archives. For example: if richdecibels.com all lives in a folder on your computer, then it's pretty easy to get that whole site up on a web/p2p— meaning someone can go to either dat://richdecibels.com or https://richdecibels.com and see the same thing.

@mike_hales @Matt_Noyes @maiki @clayton @richdecibels Part 31.) In beaker, click the hamburger icon > create new > from folder.2.) select the folder holding all the richdecibel goods and publish it as a dat.3.) copy this dat url and go to hashbase.io and add it to the sites they seed. 4.) Go to the DNS manager for richdecibels and add a new text record in whatever way they offer. This text record would point at the bare domain and it would just be a modified version of your dat url.

@mike_hales @Matt_Noyes @maiki @clayton @richdecibels Part 4I use nearlyfreespeech for my sites, and the resource record screen looks like this for me:dns resource record for nearlyfreespeech The important part is a form with a name field, a type field, and a data field. Name is left blank, type is set to text, and data is the datkey mentioned in this post
