I do not like the DNA test grifters. both the implications and the premises of the project are dangerous and flawed imo.

@mardiroos so is there anything to be done about it if I did one in the past?

@mardiroos it made me think about your point about Facebook mediating our friendships, because I think those DNA tests strive to be a medium between you and your culture/history

@thescarredstone I don't know, I'm afraid--you might be able to request they delete your data?

@mardiroos i'll look into doing that, not that it probably would change much.

@mardiroos not quite in the same way or to the degree that Facebook does of course, but they (likely unintentionally) flatten your cultural identity into sequences of proteins. And get paid for it

@illnessideology yeah, they flatten and essentialise your understanding of your cultural identity into a very limited and arbitrary set of regions and nationalities, which are almost nonsensical in a real historical context

@mardiroos beyond the whole like studies going into those companies that basically prove they sell your data to medical companies and any advertiser that will buy it, i have a deep ideological issue with a service that for many people helps confirm a higher or lower status of "whiteness", this may not always be the intent but i think it has like deep ideological ties to some weird science that skeeves me out.

@mardiroos the whole concept is very consistent with nationalism which by its nature projects the existence of the Nation back in time well beyond the point in time which people actually started thinking of themselves as belonging to a nation.

what a simple project, to write geographic genetic identity! 23andme says it looks to 500 years ago, "before ocean crossing boats and airplanes came on the scene". let us place the "Scandinavians" within those well-defined borders (disregard the Vikings in Ireland, Constantinople, North Africa), and the "Northern Europeans" too (disregard the black people of African descent in England, the Normans in Sicily).

@illnessideology yes, precisely! it is a project that constructs national and regional identities in a way that would have been totally alien to the people whose hypothetical genetics we're ostensibly using as a referent

ah, can't see anything wrong with essentialising borders that were largely a result of modern colonial projects!!

@mardiroos I'm a big old genealogy nerd, and I have a few family members who've suggested taking one of the commercial tests and it's really hard to get them to understand why I have zero interest in letting a private, for-profit company have access to a single strand of DNA.

@mardiroos it's weird how deeply entangled the scientific project of classification is with phrenology, literally every generation of new scientists rediscovers it basically

@thatcosmonaut yyyyyup. feel like it's a signifier of how deep the idea of the racial nation-state is baked into the, uh, genetics of western society

@mardiroos 23and me.com may perpetuate a racist pseudoscience, but it also caused a bunch of Nazis to melt down by telling them they're part Jewish, so, it;s impossible to say if its bad or not,
