@emmaschuetz I think the main issue is the French fries, which I don’t typically like very much anyway. So it makes the rest of the stuff I’m not 100% all in on all the more noticeable

@Mosie I’m not a huge fries person either but the cheese curds!!!!!! Are so good!!! Also the type of fries totally matters - they need to be medium-thick so they don’t get soggy fast.

@Mosie really good poutine is great but my experience is that most poutine is not very good. For my Canadian dollars, mediocre donairs are a whole lot better than mediocre poutine and easier to find to boot, making them the superior Canadian artery clogger.

@CJBurger I’m not sure where to get “great” poutine tbh. It’s tasted p much the same wherever I’ve had it, admittedly in northern Ontario lol

@emmaschuetz is the gravy always salty? That’s another obstacle for me. So salty.

@Mosie I've only ever driven through Northern Ontario, so I definitely can't help there - but in like 20 years I've had really great poutine in exactly one place, a now-burned down cheap diner in southern Alberta run by a family from Québec.Donairs are way easier though. Spit-roasted meat wrapped in pita with veg and sauce (which in Canada is traditionally a sweet yogurt sauce but most places have a more savoury variant of tzatziki too). Even just okay ones are as good as any fasr food burger.

@CJBurger it sounds more my speed too. I love doner/kebab/gyros p much consistently. And I just remembered the best poutine I’ve had was a hipster duck poutine from a québécois themed food truck at a dive bar in Austin lol

@Mosie I feel like there's something about the fries and gravy, even leaving aside the cheese selection, that your typical Anglo restaurant or diner is almost always gonna fuck up. You have to want to make good poutine, not just okay cheesy gravy fries.
