I'm furious every time I see the new Call of Duty Black Ops logo. It's supposed to read "Black Ops IV" not "Black Ops IIII" ... Right? RIGHT?!

@fribbledom if they're actually doing Roman numerals, yeah. They might just be emulating the four upright lines with a horizontal stroke way of tallying by 5s. But realistically they're just like "our target audience definitely doesn't know what Roman numerals are, but they can count. Probably."

@MrAldisaADS Excuse me for a minute, I have to go burn some clocks. In all seriousness though: it actually was the original way to write a Roman four. It still feels so wrong to me π

@fribbledom it can be either tbh! There's various reasons why iiii is used and sometimes IV.

@fribbledom maybe it's supposed to be "tally marks" instead of roman numerals

@fribbledom I just looked up the logo and I'm so confused now, did they just never mean those numbers to be roman??? Are they just lines?? Is five just gonna be that but with an additional diagonal line through the other four?

@fribbledom @MrAldisaADS Yep. One sees both serializations (IIII and IV) in Latin inscriptions and manuscripts across periods. I agree it's still jarring to the modern, educated eye.

@fribbledom IIII is also legit Roman numerals. The subtractive style, IV, is actually a newer variant version, that didn't become popular till the XIII century https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subtractive_notation

@fribbledom You can thank ye olde Roman sundial makers who were superstitious of using the first two letters of a god's name (IVPPITER, as Jupiter was spelled in Latin) to represent a number on a sundial face; hence IIII on clock faces instead of IV. Plus, I think it looks way more badass this way, if I'm being honest.

@fribbledom I think it's taught to children as IV because they want there to be one right answer. The idea that there isn't always one right answer is taught much later--if at all.

@fribbledom Maybe the fifth one will have a 4 lines with the fifth line crossed over them, like a prisoner counting days.https://image.shutterstock.com/z/stock-vector-lines-counting-to-vector-246933826.jpg
