Seht cuts off his Face so he can walk as anyone. Ayem cuts off his feet so he can walk any way as he wishes. And Vekh stabs him in the back so he can feel the muatra from both sides.

Morrowind retains a real metaphorical power for me that not much art does

@mardiroos kinda wild how amazing that game still is, does a lot more questioning and grappling with the ideology of fantasy and power structures within it than most super acclaimed pieces of fantasy often do.

@mardiroos @Tasnyx the sci-fi fantasy book publishing hype machine is incredible to watch. I love when a book has 100 ecstatic reviews without a single negative one...

@goodleftyfundies @Tasnyx I think I remember Le Guin writing about her struggling with the lack of a real critical relationship within sff. Fandom is antithetical to real critical conversations and movement, I think.

@mardiroos @goodleftyfundies yeah le guin talked a lot about how much she rejected that sort of "critical" field, same goes with asimov in his day. a lot of sff feels like early games journalism in the sense of, everyone is in wonder at the concept that people are creating something in a field they enjoy, that their critcal lense is so distorted.

@Tasnyx @goodleftyfundies yup. there's no way for a field to grow if all it's able to process is sycophantic praise

@mardiroos @Tasnyx the publishing industry encourages and rewards this behavior too...they basically can just send advanced copies to friendly publications or reviewers on goodreads

@thatcosmonaut hoo boy.So, first of all, this is one version of the history; there is at least one other conflicting version. In this picture, Indoril Nerevar, a great general and mythic hero, is betrayed and murdered foully by his council of advisors, the Tribunal. However, because they love him dearly, they act so he can be reborn freely: removing his face so he can be anyone, his feet so he can walk where he wishes. Dagoth Ur, his ally (in this version) is forced into the ground.

@thatcosmonaut It's also possible both or all versions happened. In Morrowind, which takes place long after the Foul Murder, you play as (maybe) the prophesied reincarnation of Indoril Nerevar, the Nerevarine; the method of the murder is what allows you to walk how you wish (that is, be from anywhere, any race or class).

@thatcosmonaut when Morrowind takes place, the Tribunal and Dagoth Ur have become gods for reasons close to Foul Murder, and are fighting, and both have rewritten the history of their origins. Both have a claim to being betrayed and to betrayal. A lot of the plot of Morrowind is about apostasy and heretic histories and myths.
