       did you know that the only way to determine an original nintendo ds or ds lite's firmware version (without using homebrew) is putting in a game cart, starting pictochat, removing the cart and looking at the colours the screens show

       the ds didn't have any official firmware updates but there was a custom firmware that allowed the system to load ds software from the gba cart slot (slot-2) without needing a separate ds cart slot (slot-1) device. to make the os rom writable, you had to remove the battery cover and stick some tinfoil into a small hole to bridge 2 contacts together

       @oolongstains the firmware wasn't actually relevant on these systems, you only had to know which one you had when you wanted to use a custom firmware and those were also only made for very special edge cases (wanting to load ds Homebrew from slot 2)
