#Musicologists and music historians, what can you tell me about 20th-century American genius composer and musician #FrankZappa? Why should 21st-century people know about him? What legacy did he leave the #music world?

@cosullivan here is an interesting piece I learned about by chasing down what a Canon commercial was using for background music (yes, I'm a freak). I also was introduced to an interesting group by that search: Gotan (spanish wordplay messing with syllables - tango/gotan).Chunga's Revenge by F. Zappa:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPTWbcijFnEMy fav of Gotan is:Gotan Project Live - Santa Maria (del Buen Ayre) DVD https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-DkkpGk5h0

@cosullivan I don't know much about Zappa myself, but a friend of mine (a Zappa fan) recommended this documentary to me:"The Freak Out List"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYtK04och-0I've seen it once, and it was good. It's more about his influences, though, so I don't know if it will answer your questions.

@cosullivan #FrankZappa left a sardonic exposition of the foibles of the late 20th century. Most of it still applies.-)

@cev This eventually led me to some FZ voters' rights PSAs, so helped much with research. My kid can make a resounding argument for the relevance of Zappa's legacy in music and activism.

@cosullivan @cev The first Zappa song I ever heard had a rather expletive-laden title (I shall refrain from mentioning it here, but it is available upon request) and I was sorely impressed.

@xmanmonk @cev My first Frank Zappa song was either "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary" -- only now do I see the Gregory Peck wordplay, I thought at the time it was a rhyming name, from "Studio Tan", the album my genius hippie cousin played for us. FZ is a huge influence on him.

@cosullivan zappa would have voter registration at his gigs. That was cool. He was a republican tho surprisingly...I love the album 'make a jazz noise here' which is largely a mixed set of recordings from tours.Childhood friends with Captain Beefheart - producer of Beefheart's Trout MASK Replica.

@cosullivan @cev he was also invited to speak to Congress (along with Dee Snider and John Denver) about album labeling for explicit content during the PMRC years (recording: https://youtube.com/watch?v=hgAF8Vu8G0w ) - his three-disc album "Joe's Garage" is an anti-state-censorship rock opera (definitely not listening fare for most kiddos, extremely explicit themes throughout). FZ was a very political cat.
