Looking for a good media center solution that supports hardware decoding of 4k/h265 content. Any recommendations? Are there any Pi clones that do the trick yet?

@jeffmc I guess that's one way to go, but I was really hoping for a Pi-sized ~$100 solution.

@fribbledom PI is underpowered, and while it does have the Neon vector instruction set, it does not have a HW decoder, last I checked. The Neon vector unit can help the vector quantization, but it is not a real HW decoder.

@jeffmc Yeah, I'm aware the Pi itself isn't the solution. Even though it copes surprisingly well with 720p h265 content and software decoding.I just thought there must be something similar that already comes with hardware decoding.

@fribbledom look at the Pine64 and it's derivatives. Might be enough. It is a quad ARM based board and is under $50

@fribbledom apparently ODROID-C2 can do 4k. Unsure whether LibreELEC supports it though

@fribbledom Apple TV 4K + Infuse is a pretty amazing setup. Handles all the 4K HDR content I throw at it

@fribbledom I would also recommend the Odroid-C2. Its around $50 and has emmc and Gigabit ethernet. Plus x264/x265 hardware decoding and 4k support because of its full size HDMI 2.0 port.

@fribbledomI can recommend the MiBox from Xiaomi. It's 50€ and amazing for that price (also handles h265 and 4k HDR content just fine). I have Kodi running on it which streams the media from a hetzner server over webdav. Not an open box though (runs latest Android TV). Unfortunately it doesn't come with an ethernet port though but supports AC standard Wifi. It also has an optical audio output so it' good for hifi audio as well.

@fribbledom It's pricey but I hear the NVIDIA Shield is great for this.

@fribbledom I wanted something with a bit more power last year and I had to go with an low-end Intel Compute Stick. But now the new stuff from https://libre.computer/ looks pretty interesting (and they are actively getting the 4k stuff to work).

@fribbledom When it comes to multimedia I'm quite happy with my S905x based box. Running openElec+Kodi. Paid USD 40ish. It for sure does FullHD h.265, not sure if 4k. Moot point though as there are boxes based on newer SoCs from that family that for sure do.

@fribbledom Maybe a 2nd hand old aptop (with broken screen or something to get it cheaper) does the trick.
