Your daily reminder that the police in the United States have never been intended to protect citizens or fight crime, that their purpose is and was to uphold power, money, and white supremacy. There's a reason the beginnings of modern day law enforcement followed the freeing of the slaves- to continue their oppression. It's made clear repeatedly, in every tragedy on the news, with every unarmed person murdered. They didn't even switch up their flair.

@StarStuffSister So, if the department uses seven-pointed stars or shields, they're not part of the vast conspiracy?Modern American police departments started with the first one in Boston in 1838, well before 1865 or Dred Scott's case in 1857. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-origins-of-policing-in-the-united-states/I hate the cops, they're bad enough without people saying "cops can't melt steel beams", please don't make me say another word in their defense.

@p You chose to defend the police, no one made you. I was speaking about the modern convention of racist charged/white supremacist policing that revved up in the reconstruction era. You didn't teach me anything. Go away.

@p And the police force started with what? That's right, a more diverse populace that certain people wanted "controlled". Condescend elsewhere, shoo

@StarStuffSister You are spreading an actual conspiracy theory and this the pro-police case is easier to make if the anti-police case looks crazy.Cops didn't show up in the US out of nowhere. (Ever heard the words to "Blow the Man Down"?) Enjoy making the world a worse places, I guess. Bye.

@StarStuffSister @p The first modern police force was the London Met in 1829, which was extremely controversial, but contained within it the notion that communities must consent to being policed. The legislation in Boston was surely a copy of that, but the US mostly never bothered worrying about consent. At all. I'd never even heard of the idea of consenting to policing until I left the US.(Also, holy shit that snopes page is anti-union.)

@celesteh @StarStuffSister Yeah, big fan of Peel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peelian_principlesI didn't see anything anti-union on there. I saw "useful for breaking up labor strikes", but noting effectiveness is not a value judgment.

@p @StarStuffSister really? Preemptive violence against strikes before they become 'destructive' didn't seem anti Union you? People actually died.

@celesteh @StarStuffSister I didn't see a value-judgment, it seemed like they were describing the intentions of the actors.I know people died. I don't know what that's got to do with anything. I was wondering if I'd missed something that you had not missed.
