@gayhobbes my standard spiel is that its a lot like growing up catholic, in that its only traumatizing in retrospectmy hot take is that while its clearly bizarre, its no more or less alienating than growing up in a standard american suburbboth are good examples of the way humans shouldn't be living

I would never choose to live there, but I don't think growing up in c town was any inherently worse than growing up in any other conservative southern town (which is to say bad)the things people react to about celebration are just window dressing. the thing that actually made it bad was that it was mostly republicans

@gayhobbes @realmaxkeeble see, this is a good example. lawns dont bother me or strike me as weird. but as ive learned facts about them, i find people who insist on green lawns in areas where grass cant easily grow without help to be sociopaths. at least plant clover, my god. a true ride or die xeriscapes tho
