you: do you like this cover of a songme: i mean its good, but they completely changed the chordsyou: yeah! its all jazzy. big jazz chordsme: but theyre not even the same chords at all! theyve just sat there and reharmonized the entire melody using one of those How To Write Jazz books! its barely fuckin jazz at all. i had a yamaha keyboard with a Harmony button that could do this. press it once: triad. twice: country 6ths. thrice: jazz block chordsyou: yeah! i love Jazz. big Jazz Fan

tfw u read a book about jazz because u wanted ur music to sound sophisticated and now 50% of the keys on the piano are pressed down at any time, so any melodic movement basically consists of alternating the keys you were pressing with the ones you weren't, back and forth, music becomes one of those 16-tile puzzles, and there are only two chords in the song: the chord that has the root note in it, and the chord that doesn't

@quine the truth is, it applies to anyone in the last few decades who thought that what 50s modal jazz needed was less simplicity,,,,

@jk as someone who knows just enough about music theory to be dangerous.... I don't know how to feel about all that...

@jk an Esteemed, Award-Winning composer once taught me:- major sevenths are fucking cheesy- stop tonicizing pitches when you're not coming in for a landing- stop adding a diatonic third to every chord- stop adding a minor third to every chord- stop adding a triad in first inversion to every chord- stop adding a triad in root position to every chord- we all know counterpoint is dead. but it's a bad sign if you're getting parallel fifths for solely probabilistic reasons
