Why would anyone block or hate people solely based on their suspected political views?I'd date a communist girl even though I think communism doesn't work. My gf has a totally different political views from mine, and we are ok so far.Why can't people just discuss things as adults?

@newt because "adult" is a relative term. plenty of sexually mature individuals aged multiple decades biologically retain the tastes and sensitivities of 8-to-13 year old children perpetually. The argue like children, with childish goals such as "winning" the argument, and take it rather personally when they lose or the situation does not resolve in alignment with their wishes.... this will not improve without global thermonuclear war, and probably not even then.

@jeremiah I don't think this is the case. It seems to me that the society has become more polarized and political views became a part of peoples' identities. If you look around the fediverse, people often mention that they are left-wing or right-wing in their bios.It used to be that people identified themselves with various music genres or subcultures. I think some political figures are trying to highjack this mechanism.

@newt id say only block people with opposing opinions if theyre being dickwads about it or if what theyre doing is actively causing problems

@newt The footballization of politics; totally. but there's more to it than that. I think it's a case where symbolic divisions represent far deeper rifts. When stress factors hit critical Northern Ireland, the fight was between Protestants and Catholics, but it's not like they were fighting over the doctrine of transubstantiation -- those were just the symbolic camps that defined the 'sides' when things broke.I think what's going on is like this somehow.

@nj1 in this case opinions don't matter, and you'd just block any dickwad. This is a different story.

@jeremiah so what you're saying basically is that people just want to belong and matter? God damn tribalism!
