@shadow8t4 dang.not sure what to do next, then? if this is a system with a weird GPU, you might look into the images that include proprietary firmware? it's at least something to tryhttps://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/

@shadow8t4 @trini Try switching your TTYs around? it might have loaded the text install on a different one (or try grabbing an alternate install ISO such as the minimal net install that doesn't load X into the installer)

@shadow8t4 this is the most interesting debian install bug I have ever seen, and I've run into a whole bunchI read through the whole thread and I've got one question that no one seemed to ask: what media are you running the installer from? CD, USB, something else?

@shadow8t4 Okay, that's probably the problem. Using third parties to set up your image and using anything other than an ISO will almost always break a debian installer. The one time I got problems similar to what you're describing, I'd used unetbootin to set up the USB.I wound up burning a CD instead, but here's the link about doing it via USB.https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en

@shadow8t4 dd might be the problem... I've never actually used it, but it sounds like it partitions the drive, which the debian docs specifically say will cause problems"ImportantThe image must be written to the whole-disk device and not a partition, e.g. /dev/sdb and not /dev/sdb1. Do not use tools like unetbootin which alter the image."^ this part

@jackolas yeah, I realized that late last night. I think my best options are either go Ubuntu and strip down to Debian or go debootstrap. I can do either technically, I used to manually install arch from base and debootstrap is a similar process. But by far it would be much easier to just go the Ubuntu method.
