Ok. As someone who is out of the loop, is there something going on with mastodon.social?

@ron Share with me what you learn. I posted a #phlog asking what's going on. Best I know is that instances are threatening to block mastodon.social and today's news that @Gargron is limiting registration to invite-only.I have a mastodon.social account so I'd like to know what changes are happening. Knowing why would be a bonus.

@cosullivanIt was suggested that links should be underlined to be more accessible to users, Gargron squelched the idea saying it would make the UI look messy. A lot of people disagreed with him, with some quite cogent and sensible arguments. Then some suggested that m.s was getting a little big, and perhaps it would be blocked or silenced since it was becoming a bit of a solo with Gargron ignoring the wider community, yet again.[1/]@ron

@cosullivan @ron Invite-only change is unrelated to any current events and doesn't really change much for anybody who already has an account.

@Gargron @cosullivan @ron There are people who think .social should be blocked, mostly involving pay for moderators. Eugen has been paying moderators from both Patron and grand funds. Invites have been closed on .social for a while, just to help grow other instances. My question: are the mods asking for more money? What are their opinions and where are those threads. I haven't seen them come to my instance yet. Is it more than just mod pay? Is there an official statement?

@cosullivan @ronAnd I meant silo.Anyway, as usual Gargron appears not to like sensible suggestions made by other people, when it comes to his 'baby'. But, he then decides to do what has been suggested, making out that it was his bright idea, all along. This has annoyed a few people, who are choosing to either block or silence m.s from their instances. Meanwhile some m.s people are choosing to move instances. Oh and Gargron has closed registrations.[2/]

@cosullivan @ronMeanwhile Gargron attempted to spin closing registrations as ...Being annoyed that everyone who comes to Mastodon sets up an account on m.s, and then whines and moans about how big and slow it is.Actually, one instance had un-silenced m.s in recent days...scholar.social if I recall correctly.---Usual Fediverse situation, in other words. Everyone annoyed a Gargron (;*[3/3]

@cosullivan @ronOh, and I forgot that Gargron got a large grant/donation from Samsung. That contributers can claim expenses from. Plus, the bonus that he's not been paying moderators a fair wage.I'll stop now. Think you've got the gist.
