@zaitcev why wouldn't you commute on a train? sitting in traffic is stupid and dangerous

@xj9 You'd have to write COBOL, though. Are you sure that you can make that sacrifice?

@Marthinwurer @xj9 where/how do you get enough practice with COBOL in this age?

@xj9@social.sunshinegardens.org You learn how to write COBOL first of all. OpenVMS is probably the most approachable way to do so, and also gives you a decent path to an "enterprisey" legacy system that demands 80k+ salaries almost invariably (source: have considered the COBOL route before but mulled it for various health reasons and the uncertainty of the private sector)

@ACE_Recliner @xj9 I would personally recommend IBM i for COBOL; the HW is easily available on IBM POWER systems and unlike IBM's mainframe OSes it's very easy to use and technically advanced

@xj9@social.sunshinegardens.org @calvin@cronk.stenoweb.net Right, I just say OpenVMS because it's a bit cheaper to get SIMH or (insert Alpha emulator of choice) and a hobbyist license for VMS+layered tools then it is to get whatever IBM i software up and running. That being said, since it runs on POWER hardware, it *is* another valid option and I'm glad you brought it up

@ACE_Recliner @xj9 true, emulators exist for DEC systems (and none for I) but finding a VAX, Alpha, or Integrity is quite harder than finding IBM POWER boxes capable of I, if you want physical HW

@xj9@social.sunshinegardens.org @calvin@cronk.stenoweb.net Well I guess I lucked out in the sense that I managed to get an ES40 for pocket change. Very power hungry, but fun to mess around with every now and again.
