It's good to know I can copy the ARRL's Morse Code practice text at 7.5 words-per-minute in my head despite not having done anything with Morse Code in about a month. #hamradio

@nonlinearI want to do the CWops courses, they look pretty good, but it's going to have to wait until I finish some grad courses I'm taking. I do occasionally use the CWops trainer to practice on my own. @ND3JRhttps://morsecode.scphillips.com/trainer.html

@ab3xu @ND3JR I am really enjoying the CWops course. I knew the alphabet, but would get lost in the dits/dahs trying to listen to words. With the course I am confident I will be on the air making QSOs soon.

@nonlinear @ab3xu @ND3JR Don't be afraid to get on the air at whatever speed. Any decent CW op will QRS to match you. De K2FI

@filkerdave @ND3JR @ab3xu Thank you. I have heard that about CW operators QRS to match.

@filkerdaveSorry, didn't have the time to try listening for you here in Philadelphia. Most of my time until May we be filled with work during the day and two graduate courses at night and on weekends. @nonlinear @ND3JR

@filkerdave @nonlinear @ND3JRThe Mountain Toppers look like nice little rigs. I have a palm paddle (micro?) mounted to the KX3 here, but have decided I'd rather learn with a straight key.

@ab3xu @nonlinear @ND3JR It's a fabulous little radio. Probably not gonna reach Philly on 2.5W under current condx though, especially not with buttes all around. If I get back out with the Ic-706mk2 from GTNP you should be able to get me. I'll probably be at about 15wpm but I'll gladly QRS

@filkerdave @ND3JR @ab3xu I was in the office. Tried listening on the North Utah WebSDR, but no dice. No spots on RBN or dxwatch either. :flan_sad:

@filkerdave @ND3JR @ab3xu Here is the NorCal 40A I built. Also puts out about 2.5W. Needs some more finish work on the case (as does the NanoKeyer). :flan_shrug:IMG_2480.jpg

@vu3rdd @ND3JR @ab3xu My class is 7:30PM PST. I heard about the Long Island CW Club classes on the ditdit.fm podcast, that might be an option as well.

@vu3rdd @filkerdave @ND3JR @ab3xu Thank you, but I just bought the cases... http://www.hammondmfg.com/1455ptblb.htmGood luck with the NC40A, its a fun build. There are some "upgrades" you can do as well. I want to add a frequency counter to mine.

@filkerdave @ND3JR @ab3xu I also have a Vibroplex Code Warrior Jr. And have my eye on a Vibrokeyer.I would like to learn to send without relying on a keyer (so that I could use a straight key, for example). So, even with the paddles I tend to send each dit and dah rather than holding the paddle. Although, that seems to create other difficulties, since I am relying on the keyer for timing. Maybe I should switch to a straight key for learning so I have to get the timing right as well as the characters.Any thoughts or recommendations on the best approach before any bad habits are too set?

@nonlinear @ab3xu @ND3JR The nice thing about the hobby is that there's no one right way to do it. I learned on a straight key but I MUCH prefer iambic paddles for CW and haven't touched a key for at least 2 years. If you DO use a keyer, set it for a speed you're comfortable at. The keyers in all my rigs are set for 15wpm right now.

@nonlinearA lot of single lever paddles can be used as either a sideswiper or with a keyer. You can kind of have both worlds with them. @ND3JR @filkerdave

@ab3xu @filkerdave @ND3JR Yes, it is nice to have the option. It looks like you can even try it with a dual lever paddle by shorting the dit/dah posts. Might give that a try until I choose a single-lever.
