I was reading about delta.chat becuase of @kelbot and I'm frustrated. It seems like such an obvious, inevitable, good idea. It's also kind of incredibly silly. I haven't played with it yet, so I don't know the quality of their implementation, but if they didn't fuck up the UX in a horrible way, then this seems like the solution to my chat app woes.

@ajroach42 What is it about the UX that is hanging you up? Feel free to message me for my email if you want to test it out.

@kelbotNothing yet. It's just that the user experience for something like this is what's going to be critical to getting other people on board, so it's important that they have most of the kinks ironed out before I start inviting people to try it. I installed the app, but I think I'm going to try to sleep now. Maybe we can chat tomorrow so I can see how it works?

@ajroach42 Precisely. Anything I might consider asking others to use needs to be on point and I will likely let it brew for a while, testing it with my tech friends first.

@ajroach42 @kelbot Chat app woes are relentless! I still can't find anything that works right -- it seems impossible in 2019, but here we are.Let me know how you get on with delta.chat. It's a really interesting idea, but am I missing something or is it just an email client?

@stjohn @ajroach42 It is sort of just an email client but also more than that. When the app is used on both sides of the conversation it encrypts everything and presents it like a chat.

@kelbot@stjohnIt is a chat client that is using email as a medium of exchange. It is not a universal email client. If the recipient is not a Delta chat user, they get a plaintext email. If they are, they get an e2e encrypted chat. Either way, you can interact with them through the chat interface, with a visual indicator as to the security of the conversation. From what I can see, the end result is pretty pleasant. Poke at it, see what you think.

@stjohn @kelbot That's good to know! Was that with the desktop client?

@ajroach42 @kelbot I like this idea. I've been trying to convince a few friends to try my XMPP server to replace Facebook chat, but this looks like it may be a better solution.

@drewzero1 @kelbot Maybe not "better" but probably easier to understand and convince them to adopt (which might be enough to call it better on it's own, I guess.) There are still some rough edges. The desktop app doesn't have a windows build, and needs some more work yet. The Android app is only available via F-Droid, which is fine for me but might not be for a general user, and the iOS app is still in testing via testflight.

@kelbot @drewzero1 Once that is taken care of (and I can't imagine it'll be long!) this will be a great option for convincing people to move away from Messenger.

@ajroach42 @drewzero1 It is certainly better than FB Messenger, WhatsApp, hangouts. Etc. Probably one of the most frictionless foss solutions I've come across.
