I secretly have some more controversial opinions about the online left that I literally never share out of fear of upsetting people, which is exactly my controversial opinion of the online left lmao

Like people want to act like it is unreasonable or bad praxis to call out the way leftists treat each other online, but it IS stifling and it IS more than slightly self-righteous. But I would never day this on Tumblr lol

Like one time I came across a thread of leftists just trashing on Chelsea Manning, an anarchist who spent years in prison and solitary confinement because she was brave enough to expose US war crimes, all because she made a very silly mistake of palling around with some right-wing assholes, mere months after being released from prison. She immediately apologized and said that she would do better. Didnt matter to these people. She was "cancelled." That is fucking obscene

But this happens all the time, and it really is a fucking problem, and leftists need to cut it out. Like, we seriously need to learn a little comradely loyalty to each other. If Chelsea Manning didnt do enough to earn that, than nobody did, and that is fucking terrifying. And that is incredibly stifling and unhealthy. But again, would never say this on Tumblr. And that's the fucking problem.

@kropotkhristian I hate the concept of “canceling” people tbh. No one came out of the womb already knowing all the jargon and totally committed to the leftist cause, and as long as we’re here, we’re still learning new things

@alpine_thistle I agree. Stop cancelling human fucking beings. What ever happened to restorative justice? Or is that just a leftist buzzword now?

@kropotkhristian @alpine_thistle "Cancelling" people -- the real, pile-on, ostracization kind, not the joking kind -- is exactly the type of authoritarian bullshit I will never support. No one over the age of about 15 has any business pretending that's activism and not just bullying. Some disempowered people want justice. Some just want power. The left will start thriving more when it admits there's a difference.

@kropotkhristian I genuinely very much prefer spending time with ppl who openly admit their biases and talk about their progress with overcoming them over spending time with people who want to cover their ass at all costs— which of course includes trying to hide their inevitable aggressions/microaggressions and it turns into gaslighty bullshit real fast

@anarchanders @kropotkhristian This entire conversation should be read by every leftist on Tumblr because YES! This is also something I look for in friends and comrades. Are they open about their own flaws? Do they share receipts on who is 'problematic' or do they have difficult conversations to transform communities? Do they see people as complex and changing, or as good or bad? Do they speak of transformative justice as a vision for the future or a here and now?

@kropotkhristian @alpine_thistle Pretty sure it's just a left-sounding buzzword. I get near-total pushback from any actual discussion of restorative justice. Outside a small core of prison abolitionists, no other leftists seem to treat it as anything other than random words with no implications for the real world, and that's really depressing.

@_ampersand @kropotkhristian @alpine_thistle we really gotta make the distinction between justice and vengeance bc "we should make other people suffer" is not a useful socialist praxis. anyone who disagrees has got some serious introspection to do, and also needs to disentangle themselves from violent fantasia
