Just musings upon the weird cultural practice of white ppl from Latin America considering themselves PoC Bc I dunno....their great grandfathers from Germany owned plantations in Sonora and they speak Spanish now I dunno.

I’m literally entirely too cowardly to ever say anything to any of these blue eyed devils when they claim someone was racist at them but it’s bothered me for years.

A white person from a wealthy family in Guatemala in a PhD program in the US w completely unaccented American English: the border patrol was racist to me. I mean my visa was expired and I left the country and tried to return after it expired but also racism. (This actually happened once and I obviously I still think about it all the time lmao)

@gayhobbes EXACTLY THIS. I think they get away w it Bc so many Americans are ignorant of the history of Latin American countries and don’t realize just how colonized they were/are. Spanish is negatively racialized here so a white Latin American can make these claims Bc they’re bilingual and get little to no side eye.

@Mosie well yeah that's the problem, we still equate being Latino with being like...kinda Italian looking? Not being white or Black or any other race, and we completely ignore the race structures of the countries people come from, like the complex network of colorism in Brazil for an example

@gayhobbes I forget that I learned so much about Latin America only like a decade ago and that it’s absolutely not something ppl understand over here. Like the slave trade in South America eg. Colorism as a concept period let alone how it manifests in Brazil. Etc etc.

@Mosie like literally Brazil recruited white Confederates to come colonize as the South was losing the Civil War, and they didn't abolish slavery until 1888

@gayhobbes @eweish1 @Cathymarinara maybe I’m doing an equivalency fallacy but seeing the profound racism some of my Chicanx and Latinx navigate daily both directly and I strictly via family members + ICE & detention center primary targets + Indigenous struggles in LA countries and the US etc I get really worked up when white ppl claim they’re oppressed for issues of race lol. It just like. Actually pisses me off.

@Mosie @eweish1 @Cathymarinara I think you're right about that. almost all of those apartheid states had clear distinctions between the "races," right? I think the only place in the Americas that ended up abolishing those codes was Haiti because the petits blancs and grand blancs were killed or driven out

@eweish1 @Mosie yeah but miami cubans are a special breed of awful. "Wah i lost my sugar plantation run by indentured slave labour and now i'm only living an exorbitantly luxurious life in Miami"

@Pyretta @Mosie girl please consider that there are tons of cubano folks in Miami who are not from all that, they're just doing their best and living their lives.

@Mosie I worry that I'm one of these folks because I've got a Spanish great grandfather and Panamanian great grandmother. Like even trying to include myself in Latino communities because of Spain is thin ice, I think?

@patpandahat I can't really say bc it's an ingroup/personal issue to work through. I just think that there's a lot of misrepresentation in general of positionality and experience among middle to upper class white Latinxs bc they want to lay claim to alterity in a way they have little to no right to. just my take!

@Mosie white passing latinx folks are fucking trash allies most days of the week and it’s because Hispanic culture is so deeply infused with skin tone and other colorist ideals. Saying this as some whose half Dominican.
