This is an interesting idea: a chat over e-mail. Basically an e-mail client that looks like a chat, in a way.https://delta.chat

@deshipu it’s funny because as a programmer is seems silly (because it’s just email), but as someone whose tried to convince people to use email, it’s a clever psychological hack :)

@jjg @deshipu It even implements e2e encryption. Neat. So you can also just use your existing email even. No new account to create.

@jjg @deshipu My main question is whether its easy ti filter out all of the "chat" messages from my actual email inbox.

@kelbot @deshipu @jjg If not you would need another email account for messages and one for "important stuff"

@testie @jjg @deshipu As long as there is something unique in the chat messages it should be trivial to setup an email rule to move or hide those messages.

@kelbot @deshipu interesting, how are the keys generated/exchanged?

@testie @jjg @deshipu Sending a few test messages now between a couple of my emails. I'm not sure of the details on how it handles the keys. There is a little Delta chat line added to the bottom of each message that could be used to filter them out of your normal inbox. They don't show up in the app.

@kelbot @testie @jjg That line at the bottom is your signature, you can change it. It filters using headers. You can configure the app to move all the messages into the DeltaChat folder in your inbox.

@kelbot @testie @jjg There are headers that it uses to recognize it:X-Mailer: Delta Chat 0.39.1 for AndroidChat-Version: 1.0Autocrypt-Setup-Message: v1Also, the app automatically moves the messages to a separate folder.

@deshipu @testie @jjg If you're chatting with someone on a gmail account though i'm not sure that encrryption is much of a concern.

@kelbot @testie @jjg Yeah, they still get to see the "metadata" — who you are talking to and how many messages, etc.

@deshipu @testie @jjg So the encryption would prevent google from seeing the content at lease right? But only if the gmail user was also using the delta chat app?

@deshipu Can we have the inverse please? Because eMail could do with some competition and all the good security work is in instant messaging. And yes I understand why, and that there's people trying to improve eMail encryption.

@alcinnz There is a huge problem for any new messaging software (including Mastodon), in that to be able to talk to someone with it that person needs to have an account.Remember how Jabber had its brief moment of glory, when Google enabled federation? I miss those days.

@alcinnz @deshipu deltachat is the best thing. I have been using it for almost a year. Replaces whatsapp almost completely.Autocrypt is exactly the good security work in email.

@kensanata @kelbot @deshipu @testie Cool.I’m going to have to study the encryption mechanism most closely than I can right now. I like the idea, but if I’m not generating my own key, or the keys are held by someone other than the person generating them, the value of encryption is dubious.

@jjg @kensanata @kelbot @testie The keys are generated and stored on your device, and there is a mechanism for transferring them to other devices by sending a message and then entering 9 4-digit numbers on the new device.

@kensanata @galaxis @deshipu @testie @jjg You have to use the actual app. Otherwise it will just appear as an email in your inbox. I sent you a message as well.

@deshipu @jjg @kensanata @testie Do you know how many projects I have been interested in that put out an electron app with promises of something better? And how many of those don't ever put out any better native apps? It's the same number.
