Every time there is a firmware update for my OnePlus 5T, LineageOS is unable to install its own updates. So I just flash the official OxygenOS image, wipe everything, and then reinstall LineageOS. Because the only other alternative is downloading the standalone firmware from sketchy-looking XDA threads, and I'm not about to do that. https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/development/rom-lineageos-15-1-oreo-oneplus-5t-t3730058So in practice, I wipe my phone every ~6 months in order to update it. This my OSS Android life

@kemonine That's the path I'm going down right now, and believe me, there are lots of bugs. Seems the only way forward is a full wipe given where I'm at.

@nolan That's really odd. Hopefully they can iron that out despite the amount of time it's likely been a hassle...

So what makes it worth it to me? I guess the fact that when I go to https://myactivity.google.com, there is basically zero data about me. Google doesn't have my location history, my purchase history, my app usage history, my browser history, or anything else. The only thing they have on me is the rare times I type "!g" into DuckDuckGo.In all honesty, if it weren't for the fact that I did Android development for years, I'd probably have to get an iPhone to live a Google-free life.

Living a Google-free life is like saying, "I'd prefer not to breathe air. Let me show you my elaborate system of scuba gear that allows me to live my life air-free."

@csravens OsmAnd is not bad. And location actually works if you're using MicroG.

I only need a phone OS, the other stuff runs on my infrastructure.

@nolan One question: Why is it a divide between "Android but without Google" and "iPhone without any care for privacy"? I believe there is a middle ground, a regular Android phone, because that's like having a functional iPhone.

@nolan google isn’t that important. it’s scuba gear in both cases, except one is free but covered in cameras and spy gear and the other respects your ducking freedom

@m4iler @csravens Signal is a thorn in my side unfortunately. The latest version does not seem to work with microG, just crashes. I had to go back to vanilla LineageOS.AFAICT maps/location just do not work without microG, nor do push notifications, so I had to go without those in order to get Signal to work. Also running Android 8.1 currently, curious if/how you got maps working.

@nolan @csravens OsmAnd worked out of the box. Got mapy.cz, downloadable as well, but Czech and more detailed.

@m4iler Are you using LineageOS w/ microG, or just LineageOS?

@nolan Just LineageOS, too lazy to install microG, but I'm on the fence. If I install it:1) will it reset my LOS to defaults?2) will it enable my banking app?If 1no and 2ya, I'm in.
