"My name's FOSS Developer and even though I'm from the demographic who has historically held all the equity, in a region that has been prosperous for hundreds of years, have had the means of my education provided to me by that culture's government, and expose myself almost exclusively to peers who work in the business sector of that culture......I really think I'm the best one to know how people without any of those things should use technology for their benefit!"

@emsenn @RandomDamage "My name is J. Random Hacker and I have no idea what other people want their software to do, so I just write my software the way it's useful to me. Understanding other people is so hard... I guess I'll never be good at it."

@Wolf480pl I don't know why you've tagged @RandomDamage but I worry my shitpost has now been used to throw shade at someone specific and that was not my intent. D-:

@emsenn @RandomDamage He boosted your post, I tagged him because I was replying to your boost, and I want to see his opinion about my reply too. Also, what I posted is how I feel most of the time, so I shouldn't have used quote marks.

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage Oh, okay, I misunderstood and assumed the worst!Let me try take 2 of responding:As long as you're clear you're not offering technical support and a community along with your repo, I love when people share those projects!Probably 3/4th of the code I look at for inspiration/problem-solving comes from those sorts of places.

@emsenn @RandomDamage Hm, ok but if a community forms on its own? Like, random nerds sitting in their basements, who have a similar taste to mine, will start using it and helping each other with problems and sending patches my way...Would a big "I don't care if anyone uses this, but patches are welcome" text at the top of readme be enough?

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage Oh I don't think it even has to be that clear. Here's an example of the README format I use and advocate: https://git.sr.ht/~emsenn/cultural-guide-for-fediverse-newcomers

@emsenn @RandomDamage Looks like a regular old readme. Nothing shiny, no bold statements. I like it.Nice guide btw..

@emsenn @RandomDamage Btw. I think this difference between what you describe in your original post and my initial reply is the same as the difference between eg. Gnome and i3.One tries to be "user-friendly" and guess what will be easy to use for non-technical users. The other just says "That's what works for me. May or may not work for you."

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage I agree - and I much prefer yours, because it's soooo much less presumptive.

@Wolf480pl @emsenn that's normal OS contributors, but there are outliers for sure, and those outliers can do a lot of damage because they "know best".

@RandomDamage @emsenn Hm... now I wonder about all those UX people who come and tell you your project has a terrible UX. Do they really know what other people want, or are they charlatans?

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage A lot of it is them just being weak communicators and so using phrases like "people want," instead of "I want," because they're concerned that their personal wants will be dismissed. Now it may be they're weak communicators and are actually referencing good sources on UX studies but, usually not.Sometimes they're right, it is bad... but maybe not for your use case, and they forgot to consider that.

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage I've found it pays to search for the usernames of people who send me requests to see if they're like, informed. Usually they aren't but sometimes I get a message from someone who happens to be an expert in the field and it sends me down a wonderfully educational rabbithole.

@emsenn @RandomDamage hmm... I wonder... if someone claims sth like "I'm a UX expert, UX of FOSS projects is bad", is it a good idea to ask for a link to a paper?

@Wolf480pl @RandomDamage That's what I do! "I'm unfamiliar with these concepts, do you have further reading you can recommend so I can consider this further?"It puts some burden on them ("link plz") but tries to remove as much as possible - I'll read this and use it to give consideration to your idea, rather than asking you to explain."
