i used both sunshinegardens and then sunbeam (when sunshine shut down for a short bit), i'm totally surprised you would compare the two. similar names, really different instances, sbc was to me an example of how to take something which could have almost universal appeal and make it so unnecessarily polarizing (disclaimer: based on my limited interactions with some users during a specific time of the instance).

@mlgI'm not really sure what you mean by polarising. Sunbeam City's pretty relaxed, and it's a healthy community. How long ago were you a member? We might have been going through a rough patch or something... things are cool now though.That said, I'm open to criticism. At the time there was basically a an-cap witchhunt, which seemed to 1) devolve to basically chanting super violent revolution type ideas that doesn't lead to anything except violence and power vacuums at best, and 2) really isolating anyone who believe free markets could be a distributed solution to an efficient marketplace (so overly sensitive against an-cap, throw out a lot of more reasonable economic ideas)basically i saw it drive away a number of people who imo agreed on 99% of the actual import values, but pushed away because of an extremist political flavoring that was added by some.this is perfectly fine if admin's goal is to create a online pep rally, like infamous r/the_donald. thats doesn't encourage growth towards a discussion forum to share, challenge and refine ideas, and this is personally the goal of any online communication I want to put my time into.

@matilde @Siedge meh, left-wing libertarian is a decent way to describe me, even though i tend to steer away from political labels to avoid pidgeonholing myself. i just cant wrap my head around it, political views arent a big thing to me in social interactions, and i tend to have genuinely interesting conversations with friends i do have disagreements with, but my views are still important enough to me that i wouldnt abandon them over other people's actions.

@essie @Siedge yes, i think conflict is how we get better opinions and personal development. we need antagonists, ha. but I'm starting to favour Jung's analysis of individuation on it — first stage of development requires no "toxic influences" on a developing person with total adherence to a label, but eventually you leave the space, become your own person, seek out people to butt heads with.
