What's this whole thing about having to say "GNU/linux", is it a copyright thing? because if it is, that is so funny to me

@splendens Say Linux, only RMS worshippers demand you to say "GNU/Linux"

@splendens its not copyright, its, well copyleft kind of? basically rms' thing with it is that linux is just a kernel but gnu tools and licensing on top of that kernel is generally what people mean when they say "linux". mostly its a big thing to him and his stans bc it keeps gnu and the free software foundation in the conversation which, to play devils' advocate, is a big part of what makes linux (or gnu/linux if you prefer) linux

@anna @splendens the thing that has to be understood about rms is that all these are true: he's a horribly bad person, he's mostly right when it comes to software, and a big part of his arguments are fairly pointless pedantry. There's two different kinds of points behind GNU/Linux: firstly it credits GNU, which tbh is cool as it's the reason modern Linux exists (even if it isn't techically that relevant today). And also pedantically it makes no sense to speak about Linux as a complete operating system. Personally I just siddestep that part with "Linux-based operating systems, like Ubuntu". But GNU/Linux makes sense when you want to exclude Android
