The word "security" has long been misused to justify all sorts of measures that conveniently give a company more control and the user less. Now "privacy" is getting the same treatment: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/01/22/google_chrome_browser_ad_content_block_change/

@kylerankin Do you have a good working definition of #privacy you prefer?I'm finding these distressingly hard to find, even (or /especially/) in serious works (academic papers, policy prescriptions).I'm leaning strongly to: the ability to effectively define and defend limits on information sharing or disclosure.Jill LePore has been doing some good recent work in this area IMO -- past 5-10 years, actually.Thoughts?

And ... in other news, I find my decision to nuke Chrome and Chromium from my systems to be utterly vindicated.

@dredmorbius Yours seems like a reasonable definition to me.

@kylerankin Thanks, it's got some thought into it. Good thought, I'm not so sure....Another key idea is that privacy seems to be an emergent response to increased capacity for nonlocalised, non-immediate, or durable intrusions. When surveillance had to happen in person, in time, in space, and wasn't easily communicated or recorded elsewhere, privacy was ... somewhat self-enforcing.Remote, automated, recorded, broadcast methods raise the ante. Privacy is a response to infotech advances.

@kylerankin And in other news, I'm very much looking forward to the Purism tablets.
