Raise children to see religion as art— costumed and set dressed ritualized performance, based on a story with an inconsistent narrative and not necessarily likable characters, but an impressively extensive cosmology, fraught with problematic themes but generally decent morals, that should always be understood within the historical context in which and for whom it was written— rather than as hard truth worth fighting for, and you’re half way to having raised gentle and accepting humans.

@SuzanEraslan That’s brilliant. Religion is a performance of identity.

@tbeckett @SuzanEraslan no, that's what people think religion is and how it seems based on organized religious groups. That is not in any way what religion and spirituality truly is.

@hector You’re conflating religion and spirituality in a way that I do not. @SuzanEraslan

@tbeckett @SuzanEraslan then what is the distinction?

@hector I like to compare religion and spirituality to law and justice. Laws are a system intended to create justice and are a valid way to do so, but but frequently achieve the opposite result. Justice can also be achieved without laws just as laws do not always create justice. Likewise, religion is a system to reach spiritual attainment (however one might describe it) but often achieves the opposite. And spirit can be attained without religion. @SuzanEraslan

@tbeckett @SuzanEraslan you are wrong on two counts. One, laws do not create justice nor are they necessary. A law is simply a rule made by politicians and not an ethical duty. Two, spirituality and religion are fundamentally linked concepts. If we define religion as a system of beliefs about the world using faith rather than empirical evidence, then spirituality is the inner driving force which leads us to discover and refine this religious belief. Vague 'spirituality' without specific beliefs is not meaningful, and is better stated as an emotional yet confused state of being which some people claim is somehow more ideal.
